I actually toured Livingston University back in the day (1988). Pretty decent college at the time. They did the "hot coed to show you around campus" thing too

I know it isn't a university, but I think Hinds would come in after USM. MS Gulf Coast would probably be towards the top too.

Yeah?

I know if these rankings were off academics and degree prestige instead of enrollment rankings it would be a 15+ page thread with crying from posters with Texas IP addys...

Not sure about MS, is there a private college that is head and shoulders above the public institutions like Rice is in Texas?

In Arkansas it depends on what degree you are perusing as to where you should go to school, I would imagine MS and the other similar southern states are the same, with TN being the exception.

yes. Millsaps. One of the harder colleges in the nation to get in to. Most of their undergrads go on to medical school or law school then politics

4 year only, yes, looks like he got them all plus the other one that was added by another poster.

There are several JUCO/ 2 year programs as well as trade schools around the state as well.

Thanks. I'm just surprised because Ohio has so many colleges and universities.

Arkansas doesn't have the population that Ohio does.

The last statistic/report I read had Arkansas as one of the highest in the nation of High School Graduating Seniors who went on to attend college (by percentage, obviously), however, we also led in drop outs before finishing a degree, so yea us.

I'll admit I contributed to that statistic, I dropped out after completing my Soph year to pursue a business opportunity, it was going well for the first 4 years or so until the "recession" started and the business struggled to the point we were going to fail or had to sell out, so we sold out to a competitor. I then went back and finished my degree(s), college was easier the second time around, lol.

Since no one really answered the question:

1. Mississippi State (20,424)
2. Southern Miss (17,968)
3. Ole Miss (16,786)
4. Jackson State (8,687)
5. Mississippi College (4,510)
6. Alcorn State (4,391)
7. William Carey (4,118)
8. Delta State (4,091)
9. Belhaven (3,245)
10. Mississippi Valley (2,500)
11. Mississippi University for Women (2,034)
12. Rust College (1,200)
13. Millsaps Collegs (985)

MC is the private school of choice for Mississippians that attend segregation academies, plus they have a law school that anyone with a pulse can get into, so they have a decent enrollment.

Belhaven and William Carey are decent small Christian liberal arts schools. If you want to be a preacher, Carey is a really good option. If you want to play music, drama, dance or paint, Belhaven is really good. Otherwise those places are local commuter schools.

Millsaps is one of the tougher schools in the nation to get into. Most people that come from there do go on to med school at UMMC. They have a decent $80 MM endowment despite having under 1000 students. At one point they had the highest endowment per student in the nation.

Rust is a historically black private school. Its struggling financially, so it may not be around much longer.

Valley and MUW should be shut down and merged into Delta State and MSU immediately. Those are public schools with those dismal enrollment numbers.

This is located in near Holly Springs, correct?

I've been near it and was wondering if what the back story was, you answered it, thanks.

Yeah, I think Arkansas has too many public schools for our population and geography.

Meh, not really. The locations of the schools is pretty good, you do not have any "stacked" on top of each other, really, as far as public schools. There are some public/private stacked (Conway/Arkadelphia).

The real problem has stemmed from the UA, stAte, and Tech systems purchasing and moving trade schools and JUCOs up to 2 year and four year schools, the only one that made sense was UA-FS, kinda because for the size Ft. Smith had a "need" for one with JUCOs across the state line in OK already and the nearest 4 year public schools being in Fayetteville and Russellville.

The rest of the schools being moved up have created more opportunities in degree programs, but have also driven up the costs for every other degree program still offered and taken by the majority of the students who go through the programs of these campuses (welding, PC repair, cosmetology, etc), this has probably negated the advantages created by the lottery scholarships available now due to the increased tuition costs leaving the students responsible for costs out of pocket as well, if I had a guess, I believe now the courses have more requirements as well since they are being given at 2 year schools (math and English courses for example).

This is absolutely the case for Louisiana. At least when it comes to four-year schools.

Fun fact: Jefferson Davis was offered and accepted the position as Texas A&M's first president, but his family asked him to not take it and retire to spend time at home.

-Average GPA (for incoming students): 87% have above a 3.0 cumulative in high school; 23% have a cumulative 4.0 in high school on a 4.0 scale
-Middle 50% SAT composite scores: 1050-1260
-Middle 50% ACT scores: 23-29

Just speaking of SEC schools, Millsaps is less difficult than Vandy, Florida, UGA, Texas A&M, and Missouri to get into.

Fun Fact 2: Kentucky is the state where both Abraham Lincoln, President of the Union, and Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, were born. They were born less than one hundred miles and one year apart.
