I don't think we'll lose Matthews for the whole year. He's still participating in spring ball. He could still be dismissed, but it's too early to tell.
I'd say we'll be a lot better this year. I don't expect a top 5 defense, but we were historically bad this year so improvement should be expected. As long as we don't have all or DBs running around flailing their arms in the air pre-snap trying to figure out our own play call, I'll be reasonably satisfied.

I know you like knighting for Grantham, but yes it did happen. It was a total clusterfrick in the secondary

If you're talking about this...

then you must not have watched many games. Every single game was filled with our secondary running around confused before the snap.

It will be interesting to see how good of a defensive coordinator Pruitt really is. FSU's defense had vastly superior talent to most of their opponents. Georgia's defense does not imo

I would argue the talent is there, but the secondary was extremely young with a very complicated scheme. Two things that don't mix well when transitioning from the high school level to the SEC.

Depends on how the season goes. If we're in contention for the East coming down the stretch, then obviously we stick with our seniors. Open up with losses to Clemson and Carolina and we'll probably see Pruitt trying a lot of different personnel.
Front 7 is solid, but not nearly as athletic/fast as the FSU defense last year. I imagine a lot of these guys will be cutting weight in the offseason to better fit what Pruitt wants to do. Still, a lot of experience and some great talent. Floyd, Jenkins, Herrera, Wilson, Drew, Bailey, Mayes and whoever else steps up.
Thank god Pruitt's the DB coach. JHC was the biggest playmaker on D last year IMO and that loss will be significant. Swann is about the only starter you can pencil in right now. But Moore, Wiggins, Langley, Dawson, Mauger, and Matthews all have starting experience now. Wilkerson, Terry, Green and Fenteng will get every opportunity to step up.
I'll say we finish in the top half (maybe 5-7) of the SEC in total D at 355 ypg or less. I expect the PPG to decrease more significantly. If special teams play improves, then it will help. Plus, drawing Clemson at home with no Tajh/Sammy won't hurt. I'll optimistically say 23 ppg.
Who the hell knows?

there's definitely talent on that defensive roster, but there's not the expectation of playing well that pruitt had at FSU... those guys were used to playing great under stoops, and last year was an extention (and improvement) on that. UGA doesn't have that... the last two years (especially 2012) were underperforming units.
Plus, he won't outclass many with his overall talent level like he did in the ACC. but he was a great hire, no doubt... still somewhat of an unkown quantity.
