And do programs hire coaches to fire them? Absolutely they do. If that were the case, Croom would still be at Moo State.

What? We hired Croom just to fire him, not bring success on the field? So your opinion is Shula was hired just to take a fall? Did anyone tell Shula this? And if we hired Croom just to fire him why would he still be there?

Other than interim problem fixers such as John L Smith and the guy at Baylor last year, when is this ever the case?

He was good enough to play, good enough to be an assistant for 10+ years, good enough for the NFL, but anyone can see he is not HC material?

And Gus is? Freeze? Jones? Bert?

What fools, given those above, get to plainly see who is HC material?

You obviously don't remember much about the state of UA's program and the point at which Bama had to hire Shula. In no way do I think UA thought any coach they could get at that point was going to be a long term solution.

Croom was only there as a sacrificial lamb to appease the NCAA due to shadyness of Jackie Sherrill.

A fantastic man that was a great player for the Crimson Tide, now getting to coach a couple of great former Bama RBs in Derrick Henry and Jalston Fowler.

Croom did something 12 out of 14 current SEC coaches have never done - beat a Nick Saban coached Alabama football team.

He's joined by State's former secondary coach Deshea Townsend.

That's correct. That's the same reason why our basketball team hired Rick Ray.

He did not get a raw deal at State. He actually did a great job at State under very difficult circumstances. He purged the program from the dumpster fire that was left in 2003 (I love Coach Sherrill but 2002-2003 were worse than bad). Yes 2008 was bad , losing to La. Tech and the 45-0 Egg Bowl beat down). However even there, it is more to the story than just the record (W-L).
He left the program ten times better than he found it and had laid a good foundation for Coach Mullen to build on ( which he has done quite well with to his own credit).

So no Croom is not the worst coach ever in the SEC (not even close). In fact I consider him one of the best IF you look at the whole picture well beyond the won-loss record. Without a doubt he set the stage for our success that started in 2009 and has continued since under CDM.

Coach O brought some NFL talent to Oxford. He was proficient in at least 1 area of coaching

Orgeron was 1 and 2 against Croom.

Not really - unless you're young and don't know why Croom was actually hired in the first place.
