couple of things i was shocked to find out that the SEC only played a 6 game schedule and that Georgia and Alabama didn't play that year. i get it with 10 members that would have meant 9 conference games. i guess i assumed that's what ya'll did. but 6 just seems so low.

in fact bama's only conference loss that year was to MS state and that was by 3 points in a 6-3 game.

it would have been very possible for both bama and georgia to have been undefeated that season in conference play. i'm sure that probably had to happen more than once. how was the conference champion determined?

i'll hang up and listen.

Championships were split, UK actually shared the championship with UGA in 76 (last non big 6 member to have a championship)

Lots of split champions over the years

Back in the day, SEC champion always got the Sugar Bowl; Sugar would always get whoever had been there the least recently, so sometimes they got the weaker team

6 game minimum requirement. Bama played 7 conference games in 1980. Requirement was changed to 6 game minimum/maximum in 1980. Bama and Ole Miss already had a seventh game scheduled with each other in 1981 and 1982. Those games did not count in the SEC Standings. They are the only regular season OOC games ever played between SEC opponents.

The SEC Athletic Directors made the SEC schedules back in those days, and sometimes they had grudges against other SEC teams/head coaches/ADs, so they wouldn't schedule them. I remember when Georgia Tech was in the SEC, they thought they were too educated for the Mississippi schools, so Bobby Dodd wouldn't ever schedule them. He was GT's AD until 1976 I believe...

Did they play it with the Larry Munson audio?

"Run Lindsey... Run Lindsey Scott! Lindsey Scott! Lindsey Scott! Well, I just broke my chair! Can you imagine all those people with condos on Jekyll Island, and St. Simons? Man, is there gonna be some property destroyed tonight!"

After the TD, skip to 1:15

When GT left the SEC in the mid 60's it also screwed up
the conference schedule for several teams.Clemson actually counted as a conference game for UGA for a couple of seasons.

1980 = 12 years BEFORE divisions. What was the norm # of conf. games back then? *curious*

And that question was answered

It was actually the 1980 and 1981 games that didn't count in the SEC standings. The 1982 game was part of the 6 game conference schedule for both. The SEC went to 7 games from 1988-91, and then the current 8 games when expansion occurred. In another note of that UGA-UF game if UGA had lost there would have been a 3 way tie at 5-1 between Bama, UGA, and Miss State. I believe State would have represented the SEC in the Sugar Bowl because, I think, the team that had the longest gap of not being in the Sugar Bowl was selected.

which explains how the razorbacks ended up against a 4-2 ole miss in the 1970 sugar bowl.

Georgia only went undefeated that year because they played the 6 worst teams in the SEC that year. The conference quickly added more conference games after that.

He famously didn't tell his radio audience that Scott scored on the play. Ditto for his call on the famous Herschel Walker knock-down run against Tennessee. Good announcers shouldn't leave their audience hanging for several minutes until the extra-point team attempts their kick.

that was sort of my point. i'm sure those types of conversations had to be had back in the day and the potential for shenanigans in the scheduling must have huge.

If, by quickly, you mean, eight years later, then sure, it was quickly.
