AJ was a top 20 QB on a top 5 team. He would have been a playmaker on a weaker team.

I can't actually think of a moment in his career where I looked at him and said, "a better QB would have done better this game."

He won't succeed in NFL, tattoo game alone screams 3rd string.

I think he's somewhere in between. He was a great college quarterback that was surrounded by talent. His biggest strength was that he didn't screw the pooch and came up clutch in a lot of situations.

The talent around him was detrimental to his reputation as a playmaker. On a different team, he would have been considered a playmaker. I think most teams would have loved to have had him as QB.

I think a lot of the dispute stemmed from the argument about his NFL draft position and potential. As and NFL prospect, he would be considered average (game manager).

There were numerous threads on this forum, dating back to 2011, that included posts by rival fans who were of the opinion that McCarron was nothing more than a game manager. In fact, they even went so far as to say that if McCarron were swapped out, and another QB from the SEC substituted in, there would be a minimal drop off in production because Alabama was just so talented.

Now that McCarron is gone, it's like his loss will be too difficult for Alabama to recover from.

He was somewhere in between.

He was a Field General.

We don't beat LSU in 2012, Georgia in 2012, A&M in 2013, or LSU in 2013 without AJ.
