Prayers. Unfortunately this was inevitable. Couldn't ask for a more quality person to represent UT than her. Face of women's sports imo.

That's really sad, and she's not that old either. I'll say prayers for her family. I'm sure they're going through a lot right now.

As I said in the other thread, you don't necessarily die of Alzheimers, but if you do get it, your life expectancy drops dramatically.
As with my father, he got it and basically just withered away. Went from 170 to around 100 when he died. Part of his problem was he wouldn't / couldn't eat. I think that just weakens the body so much.

Very sad...
The sad part is the time between loss of faculties and the actual end. Had a friend who's mom was in the facilities for about 5 years before going downhill. Then lingered for another decade before death came.
The irony about living longer is more about making the health care system profitable as often the added years are not quality years for most folks. My grandmothers last 5 years were not good but the last two were confined to a single room and bed as dementia fully set it. With the cost of the medical and facilities she could only have gone about another 6 months before exhausting her wealth.
Pat has the money and celebrity most will never have access to.

Very sad. Pat Summitt was and is the greatest coach in the history of college basketball.

This news makes me wanna cry. It's hard to express what Pat has meant to us and the idea that someone so known for her will and sharp mind is going through this is a fricking evil irony. I hate Alzheimer's the same way I hate cancer and pray for a cure to bot.
Goddamn it all.
Goddamn it all.

Here is a woman who was doing so much good in the world, and then she gets this disease. Breaks my heart. Hope they find a cure.

I lost an uncle to Alzheimer's and I've seen first hand what it can do. Prayers sent to her and her family and all of Vol Nation.

Are posters really downvoting my earlier post because I said 'goddamn it all'? Sorry that common expression doesn't meet your lofty standards but I've known Pat IRL and I make no apologies for being upset about this.
This is horrible.
This is horrible.

This is so sad. She was one of those people that you think are invincible.
Her mind, iron will and the notion that she was invincible were as such that many in Vol Nation, coaches and players in men's and women's basketball, and Summitt fans and/or admirers from around the globe collectively came to the conclusion that, "if anyone can beat Alzheimer's it's Pat."
And you know what? Even though I knew better in terms of how the condition works (I've seen it in my family) my heart believed it. She was just too strong not to beat it.
I'd always hoped that once she retired she'd run for governor or senator. She set an example in sports and would've done so in politics. Her ethics and ability to kick arse and take names would've been a sight to see and good for our nation.

I've said from the word go that she's the best coach ever, in any sport.
She drove the team on a bus when she first started out, won 85% of her games.
While one can't put a good face on this, I can guarantee you one thing, the woman will go down fighting with everything she has.

My grandmother died two years ago from early onset dementia. She had multiple mini strokes also. It was tough seeing her in that condition one day before her death.

Terrible news. Class act and a hell of a ball coach. Best wishes to her and her family.

I hate it for her family but glad she is not going to suffer any longer.
