According to Rick Barnes.
quote:
"We want to make the tournament every year starting this season. We're not going to have a rebuilding period. A big part making the tournament every year is how you schedule. I promise you right now we're never going to be left out because we didn't schedule right. We're going to have top 5 non conference schedules every year. I think it's something that's great for everyone. The fans, the players and the school.
"We brought Kevin Durant in to this building when Bruce was winning 30 games in a row in here and played a great college basketball game. It was great for everyone.
"I've already talked to Roy Williams about playing a home and home. It's a deal that has to be worked out through CBS and ESPN but that is something that will happen soon. We're discussing some final details with Gonzaga and Maryland who are going to be top 15 type teams this season as well. We're going to play a great schedule every season and we want the best players in the country to be playing games in Thompson Boling Arena. We're going to go out to Maui next year too and maybe play some big neutral site type games but the fans are going to see a lot of great basketball before SEC games start every year."
quote:
The Gonzaga series will include a game at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville in 2016, dates for games at Thompson Boling Arena and Key Arena will be announced at a later date but the series is expected to begin in the 2015-16 season.
quote:
Barnes also indicated he expects to add Michigan State, Villanova, Syracuse and Pitt to future schedules in addition to the North Carolina and Maryland series.

Great, great news for Tennessee and the SEC imo.

i'm really hoping LSU can make an announcement like this soon. We keep hearing about discussions with big programs, but nothing official

This a smart move by Barnes for a lot of reasons. I'm a lot happier about this hire now than I was when it was announced.

Yeah. This may have been what I missed most about Pearl. Certainly adds a lot of excitement to the season when you are playing these types of games.

Yeah okay

Jeez. It's not like we need a more brutal schedule. I admire Barnes' nuts but there's a lot of unknowns still and we tend to schedule well.
As a fan, these will be fun (I hope) to watch.

Love the announcement. I'm ready for TBA to turn back into a zoo

I like it, other teams need to setup and play an OOC like Kentucky does. It lifts the conference.

Starting with Gonzaga is a good jumping off point though and working your way up.

There really is no downside to a strong non conference schedule. With a 60+ team tournament, losing several quality games is not going to keep you out. If you can't win a few good OOC games, you were never going to be good enough to go to the tourny anyways. You can go .500 in OOC against quality teams and as long as you have a solid conference record, still make the tournament. A strong OOC, especially in the SEC, keeps the fair-weather fans interested and gets the program badly needed exposure. Even losses are on overall plus.

So they're actually gonna leave the state of TN for an ooc game?

That's a bunch of guaranteed losses

Yeah but I'm still wary. Last year's roster was bad. It's starting to look good now but damn that old roster was bad.

Sounds like we will have Gonzaga in Seattle this year and maybe Maryland this season as well. Michigan State @ MSU starting next season and possibly UNC as well.

Figured you'd like the way he's gonna schedule. Hopefully CAJ does the same.

Yep. Want fans to sell out season tickets, pack arenas, and convince 5 star recruits that you can be a major player? Then host Duke, Michigan St, Memphis, North Carolina, Kansas, etc in Coleman.
