Vandy has a real shot making it two. I really like their team. They leave it on the field and play hard every snap. I picked them to win this game.

ETA: They might not be world beaters but they've come a long way in recent years and now their fans expect to win games. I'm all in. Love to see them go bowling again.

I agree. What are your thoughts on their matchup? I think Vandy can get it done.

I think they're a tough, gritty team. Shurmur has looked good so far and the defense has been pretty stout.

If you have a QB and a defense the. You can win some games.

I'm torn on this. OTOH, I tend to root for Vandy when we're not playing (I like to see home state teams do well) but OTOH Shurmur is playing out of his mind and I don't want to see that happen against quality opponents. I don't want the hassle of someone playing like he's Cutler/Manning reborn.

Haha but you gotta pull for Vandy. That fan base deserves a good win. I really do believe they are going to pull this thing out.

Using my secret matrix, I've managed to retroactively rank every one of our historical non-conference opponents in the top 25. So this post isn't entirely accurate.

If you went retro enough, Vandy is a badass team that kicked all our asses for a while. Y'all introduced foosball to the SEC precursor conferences.

If you go back to the old Southern Conference which included (extras bolded - note some were founding SEC members too): Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Washington & Lee then y'all were dominant as hell and had an enormous influence on southern football.

A lot of people don't realize that prior to Shield-Watkins Field (what would become Neyland) being formed by students (they seriously moved a lot of Earth) that Vandy had the largest stadium in the Southeast by far.

Can I cheer for a win that includes a bad performance by Shurmur but a great one by my man Ralph Webb (seriously love that kid's style)?

K State fans think they are walking into Vandy with an automatic win based on old history. Things have changed and Vandy is up to the task. Their defense is nothing to laugh at. Again, I picked Vandy in the upset and I'm not sure yet if it would be an upset. Go doors!

Vandy is my 2nd favorite SEC team. They are like rooting for chaos incarnate. And, I hate all you bitches' teams so much. Plus, Vandy got the best colors. Anchor Down!!

Even when Vandy has been bad in SEC play, the majority of the time they've been a tougher team to play than anyone gives them credit for. They used to (and do now) have some good defenses. Where they always had problems was depth and at the skills positions but several coaches there were smart and created depth via redshirting. That's no different from what K-State made their bones on and still does.

K-State has the advantage but win or lose Vandy won't be a pushover. They rarely have been despite some embarrassing losses and despite some lopsided scores. And when it comes to the end of year game against Tennessee they've ALWAYS played all out and mean as hell. I've watched a lot of football at Neyland but in terms of dirty, rotten, all out football play I've never witnessed more hate on the field than UT-Vandy. They play to kill us and more than once I've been convinced there'd be an injury to one or the other because of it.

With K-State talking so much trash and Vandy riding high. I expect the Dores to play hard.

Vanderbilt Stadium was also the first stadium in the Southeast built soley for football. It had a capacity of 20,000 in 1922. Shield-Watkins opened the year before but must have had other uses (track maybe?) with a capacity of 3,200. It wouldn't be for another 16 years until Shield-Watkins was larger than Dudley Field by capacity. It's crazy how things changed with the way scholarships were regulated that hurt private schools just after WWII.

This whole "dick-riding Vandy thing" is a little weird though.

ETA: Okay, shite, apparently there is some confusion. "Weird" as in "not something we see a lot" not "weird" as in "bad".

I'm talking about when it finally expanded. Shields-Watkins was built by students. It took a ton of work and almost wasn't finished. Later it began to grow.

Kinda weird that Shields-Watkins is older. We did have 38k+ by 1938 tho so it wasn't all war. BUT schollies did change the face of football so did the first 'football panic' that turned a lot of people off. The main thing tho was that football powerhouses like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton decided to abandon sports schollies - not just football. They have ways around that if you're really good but it's very limited and you still have to meet requirements.

Those schools are more interested in looking across the pond though. Fencing and Rowing are their game and the average income of students (or their parents) largely mean they don't have to worry about scholarships.

Even back in the day, football quickly became a poor man's game, complete with ringers and playing working side jobs and getting paid a ton by playing for city teams (that was a thing). Notre Dame's team was notorious for sneaking out and playing in city games for cash.

Prof had already talked about the stadium, so the topic was up. I was pointing out that it's funny, painfully funny, how things changed.

I really don't care what you do. It's a little amusing since the next week everything will be back to "lol Vandy" for most. Okay, two weeks would be fair since against Bama it's basically "lol (insert any SEC team)" because Bama is just on another level right now.

That was mainly me. I think the history of southern football is pretty cool and I know many like to read about it too.

I don't get the dick-riding comment though. I mean many of us are SEC fans, especially when other conferences are talking trash about us so that seems a little out of place.
