You guys usually have a decent basketball team so what gives this year? Young? I was shocked how bad you lost to Middle Tenn State is why I ask.

MTSU is pretty good this year. However, Bryce Drew's team has some flaws. First and foremost, the guys are adapting to radically different offensive styles. Drew encourages more creativity and spontaneity from his players whereas Stallings had very rigid and practiced routines to be executed. Due to that design under Stallings, it was not always necessary to have a pure PG with great vision who can be a "floor general" type. We lost the player closest to that, Wade Baldwin IV, to the 1st round of the NBA draft. We're also thin inside, literally and figuratively. Luke Kornet is still a stretch 4 at 7'1. He is being asked to play under the basket with the departure of Damian Jones (another 1st round selection), and he is struggling mightily.

Tonight, Luke's inability to score inside (3-11 from in the paint) let a very aggressive MTSU defense stay spread out and hound our perimeter shooters. At that point, we were never going to get enough good looks from deep to keep up with them. Add in some really bad turnovers along with missed defensive assignments, and you have a blowout. The hope, obviously, is that the team grows as they get used to what Drew is asking them to do and will be a much better team at the end of the season. At this point, making the NIT would be a nice prize to finish year one post-Stallings.

Yes, MTSU is a quality team this year. They're playing a tough OOC schedule too. They were prepared for Vandy. Replacing two first rounders is I easy task either, unless Kentucky. Add in a new staff and there'll be growing pains.

I'm fully prepared to accept that MTSU is probably the state's best bball team this year.

We'll just have to settle for dominating football in Tennessee.
