Just a few gaps in your wonderful story here... First, you are VERY old if you smelled cordite from the firing of a .50 cal, especially since the use of cordite was discontinued as a propellant by the end of WWII - at least for military purposes... BUT since cordite use was discontinued in small arms ammunition at the end of WWII and the first "technical" delivery of an LHA was 1989ish the gap is just a little wide... Unless I missed something in history, who knows might have been some super secret LHA running around the Pacific in WWII... So, either you are confused or full of shite or on the outside embellishing a little?
