I kind of agree.

They have a lot of money. That is really the only thing that separates them from any other mediocre program.

Sure they have a big recruiting area, but they also have a shite ton of competition. Money in regards to recruits only goes so far in this day and age.

Vince Young, and an Appearance against Alabama at the 2009 BCS, that was only a four year gap. They got back pretty quickly. Also, they have been getting more national exposure.

Only one crown. 2005. In almost 40 years. "Powerhouse" indeed.

I get a chuckle out of this fact that the teasips believe that SEC teams cheat. This is a common idea amongst their fanbase. No way the SEC teams could be superior to their program without cheating. So arrogant.

My opinion is not just what I read on message boards but from the fact my Dad's wife side of the family are all UT fans.

Do you know how many coaches are going to get raises for this...

I am sure Sexton will get CLM another half mil to keep his name off the target list...

Austin Ex replied:

That's been my line of thinking since hearing the news. But now that I've calmed down I've opened up to another possibility....

Maybe instead of an attempt to keep Saban out, it was a move by Mack and Powers to keep a coach LIKE Saban (SEC cheater) out while wresting power from the big donors (who were trying to bring in Saban on their own) and place the power back in the hands of Belmont, where it should be. At the same time they still intend to end up with a great coach, but one who also plays by Texas rules (no paying players, no over-signing, gray-shirtting, etc.). In the end we end up with a clear message sent to all donors that the Belmont calls the shots and that we still intent to maintain the long-standing integrity of our program.

I don't know if either is true, but I might end up leaning towards scenario #2 so I'll be able to sleep better and night. It makes it look like Powers and Mack have integrity and were fighting for the soul of the program, and that Patterson (who I started a thread about calling him a bitch who pees sitting down) and Belmont knew what they were doing all along. It kind of makes Texas athletics look good. Also, there's still an incredible list of candidates out there.

I've never even considered, before this, that such a low level of reality actually exists out there. Do tsips really fall for that kind of stuff?

That fanbase has a serious psychological flaw, en masse.

Consider that these are the most football-savvy tsips out there, and then extrapolate backwards. It's worse than you could know without actually living here.

I've got family and friends there ... but they are all A&M fans. I've heard about it, but watching all of this go-down has changed my perception of them. They appear to be worse than taterheads.

With regard to Mack, I am acquainted with him through circumstantial coincidence. Mack and I had the same Godfather, John Cobb. Coach Cobb died last year but it was through Coach Cobb that I got to know a little about Mack, got to meet him a couple of times when he was coaching at UNC, came to understand him a bit, and I know for a fact they are completely misjudging Mack's motives in all of this. Mack is a solid guy. Like any coach at his level he's got a bit of an ego, but we all do to some degree depending upon our level of success and from where we've come.

From where I am standing this entire episode, as ugly as it has been and continues to be, is the result of shitty leadership at UT along with some seriously deranged fans who got involved on the message boards and drove it down to new lows in terms of college football hiring and firing of tenured coaches.

Were I Mack, I'd flip the tsips the bird and take a shite on their fanbase on the way out. And I'd be willing to bet that other coaches are looking at this, if they are smart, and going to consider everything that's happened there before taking a look at the job itself.

I always thought UT had more class than this - evidently they do not. They are the epitome of a fricked-up mess.

Really?

That's still far more than most programs can boast ... plus their win total is ranked way up there in terms of overall wins. And they've had a ton of players go-on to solid pro careers.

I'm with you though, if you are suggesting they are gross underachievers given their resources and recruiting base.

Are you a fan of the SIG 556? I had two, but recently dumped them for two SIG 716 Patrols. Really wanted the SCAR heavies, and they are made locally, but I wanted two and there was about $1,500 in price difference between the two when investing in two at a time ... which I always do. I put an EOTech 552 on each of mine so I had well over $4k in them by the time I got them home not counting extra mags, rail options, etc.

Well, Bama showed that money is all it really takes when they hired Saban, right?

the ole "perception is reality" thing. texas has a lot of oil money and a lot of it goes to u of tejas (a&m too) but it does NOT go to athletics. yes, tejas is at the top of athletic dept profits right now but not by much. Texans like to flaunt things, true or not, so when a donor says they have more money than the vatica people believe it, true or not.

in the years between Darryl Royal and mack brown, tejas was mediocre and that is a LOT of years. and most will agree that mack underachieved even tho he made 2 trips to the NC. he only won the big 12 twice. he did have a great run over a 10 year span.

the notion that tejas can and will "outbid" anyone and can "select" any coach or any player they want is a myth; a myth started and perpetuated by the arrogant tejas students and alumni. they have a great academic reputation as a university but their football program is one of smoke and mirrors; ie, their perception of themselves is much, much higher than reality PROVES it to be.

Yes, hiring an elite coach requires money, you are correct. Nothing gets past you.

That place is a mess right now. While UT can undoubtedly toss a big check, they toss a lot of hands in your cookie jar to go with it.

I thought we had the most delusional fans in the country, and while that may still be true...Texas fans are definitely stepping it up and vying for the crown.

No. Does Alabama have some insufferable, delusional, arrogant fans? Yes. So does Auburn, LSU, Georgia and every other team in the SEC. In the country, even. Does Alabama have more than most? Maybe, yeah. Does it come close to matching Texas? Not even close.

It takes a LOT to make me truly despise a team. But my axis of evil includes Texas, tOSU, USCw and Miami. Texas fans are among the worst I've ever seen. Just wait until (if) they start winning again. It'll be like that SNL "da Bears" skit, except "the horns".

No, and that's exactly the lesson that Texas just had to learn. Alabama benefitted from a perfect storm - big name program, money to throw at the problem, and a program so destroyed that they were willing to hand over all the reigns.

Texas still has a group of guys who measure their dicks with their wallets, who believe it's THEIR program. They need to get crushed by the NCAA and hit rock bottom, so that they are willing to let a coach take control. Otherwise, we'll keep enjoying these circus shows whenever there's an opening.
