The hard part is with the NCAA's limited investigation powers, it is nearly impossible for the NCAA to prove a kid knew something.

Agree.

I'm in no way in favor of bigger government, but if the NCAA is ever going to clean all the messes up they need subpoena power and that would include making them a government agency.

They also don't have to make anyone put their hand on the bible or can threaten them with perjury.

Anybody think Phil Fulmer, Cecil and Cam, Logan Young, etc were truthful?

although it appears the rule mostly applies to parents. Closing the loophole may be worse than having the loophole.

The NCAA created the damn loophole, so that they could shove Cam Newton through it and maintain the "legitimacy" of the game.

I'm assuming he is referring to the incident where we chose to sit out Andre for the Utah Sugar Bowl after learning some uncle was talking to agents. As far as we knew, Andre was not aware of this and wasn't even that close to the uncle, but we sat him anyways.

Not trying to be snarky at all here, just wondering what you think: If it had been the BCSCG that year instead of the Sugar Bowl against Utah, do you think Saban would have sat him? Or would he have used the Auburn "if the player doesn't know then he should be eligible" defense even before Auburn's lawyers came up with that winning strategy?

I worry about this too, although it appears the rule mostly applies to parents. Closing the loophole may be worse than having the loophole. There has to be a procedure to protect an athlete's eligibility from trash family members. With the backgrounds half these players come from, they have to be more cautious of family than they do of agents.

It seems pretty simple to me... any family member, friend, or associate discovered attempting to sell or profit from an amateur athletes eligibility without the athlete's knowledge should be permanently banned at that point from any NCAA sanctioned event.

If it can be proven that the athlete actually knew, then existing rules cover that situation.

I've never quite understood the panic or uncertainty or complaints of "slippery slope" with stuff like this. BAN them. And, if the athlete knows, take away his eligibility. Problem solved.

For example, if the NCAA used a perma-ban like this on Cecil Newton from NCAA sanctioned events, he would have never been able to participate in the future with his younger son (who may also end up being a very good, college-level talent). As of now? No problem... he gets a second bite at the apple.
