Are you all serious? 30 - 40 mile per hour sustained wind scares y'all? In SW MO we occasionally get slammed by storms with 60 - 70 mile per hour sustained wind gusts.

What do you mean they aren't used to it. Data tells an entirely different story.

Oh yeah, you're from Missouri, I forgot you need things spelled out for you. You can't have "60 - 70 mile per hour sustained wind gusts."
Sustained wind gusts are impossible. Winds are either constant, i.e. sustained, or they are temporary gusts up to higher speeds.

@dannyabtl @spann SW flight into BHM from Houston diverted to Nashville. Tried to land at BHM but wind shear too bad.
Saw that gusts in Tuscaloosa hit 74 MPH.
And for those who don't know, that's not sustained gusts.

Because Arkansas sucks.

My friend was parked in the rec fields parking lot and the wind blew his truck bed cover off of his truck and into the rec fields. That cover was attached to and secured down, it was amazing. The university had also just planted new trees in the rec fields parking lot and every single one of them was blown over and uprooted.

You don't get regular bouts of 60 to 70 mph non thunderstorm winds either. Alabama and the Deep South's weather is just as wild as Missouri's is. The phenomenon that caused last night's high winds is called a gravity wave. They aren't common events but do occur throughout the U.S. and other areas on occasion. The freaky thing about them is they often occur after storms have already passed through an area and come in wave after wave of high winds with no apparent "bad" weather occuring.

Well, we normally have sustained 100 mph winds but it just doesn't occur on a Thursday.
Tuscaloosa has a very dense tree population. And the university has several beautiful, but old, trees around campus. When wind picks up like that it becomes very dangerous.
