Florida Agricultural College was a precursor to UF.

So you are telling me 4 colleges got land by purchasing it instead of getting it for free through government or rich guy giving it to them? I can't wait to find out who they are.

Which SEC school started as a private school, became a land grant, then became an A&M, and is now becoming a research school?

Suwanee, Georgia Tech, Tulane and Florida.

In a lot of cases, its only a distinction between the Federal govt paying for the land vs the state paying for the land.
And in a lot of the Federal land grant situations, there were other colleges or universities in the same general areas that essentially transitioned into the larger institution. There were a few colleges in and around Fayetteville before the founding of AIU in 1871. They all went away afterwards.

It was just fed-gov donating land to be sold. That money was then put in an endowment to start the schools.

Mizzou, UT, MSU and LSU on the land grant but technically several haven't had "land grants" but received sea and space grants.
ETA. for the A&M schools, LSU and TAM are currently still A&Ms, someone said that Kentucky used to be so I assume they know that and the two non-flagships in Auburn and MSU.
My guess on that would be LSU, TAM, Kentucky, Auburn and MSU.

Define land grant.
This generally refers to schools funded by grants of land under the conditions set forth by the Morrill Land Grant College Act of 1862 and later acts.
Briefly, each state was awarded a federal land grant based on the 1860 census and then this land was sold to fund agricultural colleges that also taught engineering and military tactics.
After the Civil War, the law was extended to the southern states and because of segregation, each state that did not have integrated universities had to establish a school for African Americans.
Some states used the funds for already existing universities while others established entirely new institutions. For example, New York used its money to fund an Agriculture school at Cornell while Texas eventually established the Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M. California used it to strengthen what is now UC Berkeley and the agricultural school is now a fully fledged university: UC-Davis.
TL;DR - the federal government helped create or strengthen many of the great research universities across the country today

Louisiana designated Southern University the land grant school for blacks in the state in 1890. Its official name is still Southern University and Agriculture and Mechanical College.
I'm assuming schools like Prairie View A&M, Alcorn State, Alabama A&M, etc. have similar backgrounds.

I don't think this is correct. There was an Arkansas A&M, but it eventually became the Univ. of Arkansas at Monticello.

Although Alabama isn't considered a Land Grant institution, it did receive land from the Federal government as reparations after the Civil War when Union troops burned most of the buildings on campus.
