The Collegiate Licensing Company was founded in 1981 by Bill Battle after he signed legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant to a licensing agreement. In the process of developing a licensing program for Coach Bryant, Battle discovered that The University of Alabama did not have a licensing program. Alabama soon signed on as CLC’s first university client. Eight other schools quickly followed, and an industry was born.

UK signed a new deal with a CLC competitor but is probably around #5 on the list based on previous reporting years.

The Collegiate Licensing Company was founded in 1981 by Bill Battle (Alabama)

Host Communications was founded in 1972 by Jim Host (Kentucky)

IMG - based in NYC - bought both and formed IMG College from the merger

CLC (merchandise deals) and Host (media deals) were early market leaders and as both were based in the SEC were of early benefit to the SEC. Interesting that both have now moved to JMI Sports.

Website shows 4 SEC schools are now clients
Alabama
Auburn
Kentucky
Mississippi State
