I think Saban needs to be in the top 5 twice. Him getting hired at LSU changed college football forever in multiple ways.

25 years of service and bringing ALABAMA to national prominence once again, plus, navigating through segregation as the AD as well. Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant was the perfect coach for the time.

No John Vaught for quality important hires?

Are you sure you're an Ole Miss fan?

That is a solid list. Each were the right fit at the right time for their programs to take them to a whole different level.

You are either a moron or a liar. I suspect equal parts of both.

Majors was not "on his death bed". He was back on the job for 8 games. He was fired at the end of the regular season. He also lived another 30 years.

Johnny got drunk at a big dinner function for mega-donors and administration. He showed his arse royally. His words and actions crossed way over the line.

Johnny's best friend, a man with things on campus and a scholarship named after him, came home and poured himself a drink. Told his daughter, "Johnny just lost his job."

Johnny was history in short order. Nobody stabbed his drunk arse in the back. He fell on his empty whisky bottle and stabbed himself.

Maybe you should learn what you are talking about before running your ignorant mouth.

You are as bad as the Bammers hollering, "Fulmer snitched out Alabama." No, Spurrier snitched out Bama with an assist from Houston Nutt. Fulmer simply testitfied and corroborated the story.

“Johnny Vaught”

This was a huge hire in the SEC and in the State of Mississippi. Prior to 1947, State was the better football program. However, from 1947-1973 (And I know he was retired in 1971-72) Ole Miss was 21-2-4 against State.
They won a half of dozen SEC titles and were consistently in the upper half of the conference.

It finally ended when the Kinard brothers conspired to keep Bob Tyler from replacing Vaught. Tyler later became the HC at State in 1973 and the Ole Miss dominance came to an end. The MS Supreme Court packed with OM judges ensured that Tyler did not remain at State for the long term. But that is a story for another day.

Had Tyler been named HC at Ole Miss in 1971, they would have continued to dominate Mississippi and would have been a top tier SEC program for another quarter century. As he was only in late thirties then.

Johnny Vaught was definitely one of the best SEC hires ever.

Before the surgery his life was on the line. The surgery saved his life.

Majors was an amazing UT guy...but he forced Dickey's hand after coming back from his heart surgery. He lost games he shouldn't have lost, then dared Dickey to fire him (which he did). Johnny Majors is a legend in my mind, but he didn't help himself and Fulmer took the opportunity that was presented to him. Remember...Dickey fired Majors and hired Fulmer as HC.

Nothing like getting the scoop from the horse's mouth.

When asked about his last year at Tennessee, Majors replied:

"You mean the season of my ignominious demise? The season when, while I was recovering from my heart surgery, a few people whom I won’t name were operating on my back."

Honorable mention was Lou Holtz to SC.

He raised the flag high enough for spurrier to see it.
