That is a shame. Hate to see the tradition altered in this tradition rich conference.

But do you think Alabama's elitism and arrogance fosters Updykes of the world? Part of me feels like only Alabama could create something like Updyke. I have never seen Alabama fans acknowledge this as a possibility, or even a partial truth. I may not be your fault, but do you perpetuate a culture that allowed Updyke to believe what he did was reasonable?

Absolutely. You've hit the nail on the head. I imagine updyke expected to get away with it. And looks like he will! The state media is partly to blame also. Couple that with the fact that their cheating is ignored by the NCAA, and it has bred this culture of arrogance and invincibility with their fans.

Live oaks typical only live 150 years in an urban environment, and your own fan base had been abusing the trees for years.

Yall can bury Pat there and throw shite paper on his grave. That would be glorious. Think of the generations of fun that could provide. Plus it would be like maintaining an old tradition and adding a new one.

Auburn has the most beautiful campus of all the 14 SEC schools imho. A very sad situation and i wish the Auburn people the very best moving forward. Updyke would be liquidated Josef Stalin style in my world.

And FTR, the pressure washing stopped years ago and the TP was being removed by hand. And the trees were shown to be doing fine and actually GROWING before Harvey happened. By all estimates (back in 2008-2009) they had well over 100 years of life left in them. Closer to 150.

Take off your orange and blue glasses and google it. 2007 the trees were dying. LINK

Each time I see more news about the trees, I think back to what Updyke did and think "Is this real life? Did someone really stoop that low?"

And I'm not even an Auburn fan.

And yes, I know it doesn't reflect on Bama fans as a whole. I'm just commenting on the depravity of that one person.
I agree.

FWIW if you're a "Toomers Tree" roller/fan which I'm sure most AU fans are then there is a statue at Bama Fever/Tiger Pride and the same one at walmart. IMO they look pretty neat and would serve as a good piece of history for your children that never got to know about the rolling of the Toomer's Tree's. I can't find any links or pics of the statues.

Bammer fans: There is no excuse for what updyke did. None. Don't even try.

It doesn't matter what shape the trees were in. It doesn't matter that YOU consider the tradition silly. It's none of your business - none at all.

You remind me of the 99% of ahole Alabama fans who give the remaining 1% a bad name.

There's really no way to excuse what Updyke did. He represents the ugly redneck sidewalk portion of our fanbase.

On the other hand, I've never understood why Auburn fans don't denounce the times when some of their fans dress up skeletons with Houndstooth hats and George Dickel bottles and put signs up with stuff like "shake the Bear's hand". While almost everyone is disgusted by Updyke's act, let's not pretend the classless behavior is all one sided.

What Updyke did is not as bad as the countless of 5 on 1 assaults that leave people in the hospital every weekend of college football. If you ask me an unprovoked attack on another person by a gang of people is infinitely worse.

Don't get all offended, the tree killing was fricking stupid but clearly the guy has mental issues.

also 14&counting you need to stop letting what other people do have such an effect on you, I can't believe you made me agree with alahunter so much in this thread
