The material isn't inherently more or less difficult today that it was 30 years ago. But grading procedures were definitely more stringent back then. 30 years ago, a C was actually average.

Not the case anymore. Nowadays, schools have made it a lot easier to get B's and above. This decline in standards really escalated as mass media became more and more prevalent in the world. College information became easier to come by and so competition for enrollment became more fierce. Schools wanted to be more attractive to potential students so they started declining the difficulty with which they graded. This lead to higher GPA's and graduation rates which effectively diminished the value of the college education.

No link, but it is definitely true that getting a better GPA was more difficult 30 years ago. And the reasoning for it is pretty straight forward.

Note: obviously this did not happen in all schools, like the ones that have really high standards. But for the majority of non-elite colleges, no question about it that grading difficulty has been diluted.

I disagree from personal experience (engineering). This might be the case for business degrees or something, but if you didn't bust your arse in engineering they would fail you. Simple as that.

Nobody handed out A's and B's in my classes. Hell, a 3.0 overall GPA was considered doing pretty well.

I also think that, in general, students attending college, especially better schools, are more intelligent and harder working than 30 years ago, which would also result in a better grade. There is exponentially more competition to not only get scholarships but in many cases even be accepted to higher-tier universities. This is forcing students to work harder.

Spent a year at LSU and got homesick. I transferred from LSU to community college and now I'm at VCU for Journalism. Both sides of my family live and Baton Rouge and a lot of my family went to LSU including my mom. I didn't graduate from LSU but I got connections and a wee bit of LSU experience.
