A small percentage of high schools play lacrosse here in South Carolina. I’m not sure about other states. Keep in mind South Carolina is not as populated as other states.

Don’t think there are enough kids playing in the South for schools to be competitive with other schools in the country on the NCAA level. South Carolina has an excellent club team but that’s not close to NCAA play on the national level.UNC Is very good but only has one or two players from North Carolina. Duke is very good but very few kids from North Caroilna goes to Duke for school let alone lacrosse. It’s basically the University of New. Jersey in Durham IMO . Little Limestone College in South Carolina is playing for the D2 National title, they have won it several times over the years they don’t have any kids from south of Virginia playing for them.

It’s a fast growing sport but until it really catches on, may take years, to field a competitive, national contender NCAA team you are going to have to go north to get players. The Delmarva area is probably the closet hot bed for big time talent to SEC schools.

How many high schools in the 11-state SEC footprint sponsor lacrosse? Is there enough D1-caliber talent in the South to support 14 more top tier teams?

Not nearly enough local talent to support that big of a league. It would have to be a few schools going first and recruiting nationally, especially in the midatlantic region.

UF, UGA, Vandy, and maybe USCe would probably be best positioned to do that, but it would be a tough road to get nationally competitive. USCe has had club team success, but that’s not really relevant to what they would need to win at the D1 level.

Memphis has 3-4 kids sign d1 each year..would definitely have to go out of state to fill a roster...it is like baseball from a scholarship standpoint...30+ man roster with like 10 scollies

USC could definitely do lacrosse, I don’t know if it’s like this In most states, but usc is 50% New Jersey kids

I think Carolina could most certainly do it. Lot of those northern kids love to come to South Carolina. Damn Hilton Head is petty much Ohio south.

Went to Myrtle Beach over spring break was nothing but cars from New York. Loved it, come spend that money on an air brush T Shirt and help our economy.

Most logical teams to go first in SEC: UGA, Fla, Vandy and UofSC

Where did you arrive at this?

Just like the Catholic schools in Louisville pump players to volleyball in the SEC and B1G the catholic boys schools in Louisville and NKY have strong lacrosse talent and programs.

I can see Vandy and Florida but why UGA and SC?

Atlanta will be the best talent pool in the SEC region if it isn’t already. Those schools also draw a lot of students from up the Eastern seaboard where they would have to recruit.

Louisville high school lacrosse does not produce nearly enough talent to really move the needle. There are a few solid HS teams, but you need a lot more than that.

OK, I can see ATL

As for the tri cities, lots of ACC recruiting is already there between LOU, LEX, and CIN catholic schools.

Is SC hot at the middle school and high school level?

The SEC could start with the four mentioned above like the ACC has. Don’t need the whole conference. Might would have to start Women’s as well but no reason why you couldn’t do it.

Would like Clemson to add it but doubt that will happen. Heck softball don’t start at CU until next year.

Not really, but Charlotte and Raleigh have some players and Virginia has a bunch. All within reasonable driving distance.

It’s not but you would be surprised at how many kids from the northeast and mid Atlantic attend our universities in South Carolina just to come to school.Somebody earlier posted about Carolina’s out of state enrollment from the northeast. Proximity would help Carolina. About seven hours to D.C, Northern Virginia and the Delmarva region from Columbia. The proximity of Columbia to Charleston and Myrtle Beach is a draw for some of these kids.

I would think if Louisville was such a hot bed UL would start it. Who knows it’s UL.

Irish recruits Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky across the entire sports spectrum.

Cincinnati + Dayton + Northern Kentucky MSA = 3 million people
Louisville + Southern Indiana MSA = 1.3 million people
Lexington + Central Kentucky MSA = 0.5 million people

Combined the Tri Cities is about 5 million people

UL is the new kid on the block

Notre Dame in the ACC
Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio State in the B1G
Kentucky and Vanderbilt in the SEC

All recruited the city for years before UL moved from the Metro to the Big East to the ACC. Assumption and Sacred Heart in Louisville produced lots of volleyball talent for the B1G and SEC. Same with Trinity and X for the boys sports.

I have a HS freshman playing, he came to me in 2nd grade (last year of coach pitch), said he don't want to play coach pitch, will do kid pitch..I said no kid pitch for your age unless we do competitive and I can't get you on a team...he comes home next day asking if he can play lacrosse...says "you get to wear helmets, shoulder pads, and you get a stick you can hit people with".... been all in since, hope he can play in college

Vandy actually plays women’s NCAA lacrosse.

I thought UK played in that national club league like Carolina.

The guy who started the program at Limestone in 1989 lives in my neighborhood. He’s the AD there now but I have gone to several games with him and there is a lot of contact in lacrosse. I try to make all the games at the high school I work at.
