Heineken tall boy, leftover jambalaya

I am experiencing Katrina fatigue. I am just flat tired of hearing about it. We rebuilt and moved on and everyone else should do the same.

Catastrophes are a cultural touchstone. I'm sure New Yorkers get tired of 9/11 references, but it is what it is.

Just skyped wifey. Lying in bed. Tired as hell.

I know, but I just get tired of it.

Hell, Camille was in 1969 and it wasn't discussed ad nauseum growing up.

Guess cable TV and social media has changed errythang.

Well, Camille didn't have as many undertones as Katrina did. From an outsiders perspective, it was a tragically fascinating saga.

Just roll with it, I guess

My wife and I were in NOLA for our Anniversary earlier this week. We went to the Presbetyre and the Cabildo in Jackson Square. The Presbytere has a brand new Katrina exhibit. As a man in his mid 20's when I experienced Katrina from Baton Rouge, it moved me to the point where I was choked up at some points. At others, the hair on my neck and arms stood on end. At others I smiled knowingly.

There was a mannequin dressed in the outfit of a man who was a lifelong Lower 9th Ward Resident. He refused to leave. Just put on boots, tucked his jeans in, and put on a long sleeve Six Button Polo.

A lifelong crabber whose father taught him the skill and boating and living off the land when he was younger, he pulled out a handmade wooden pirogue and stated matter of factly to loved ones that he was going to ride out the storm there in the Lower 9th and then be there to help get people out in his pirogue.

There was 20 feet of water in the Lower 9th...and this billy badass motherfricker did EXACTLY what he said. Water came, he jumped in the pirogue, rode it out and then brought almost 30 people out of the Lower 9th.

Just an amazing remembrance. So many simple yet powerful stories like that down there. I was so glad to have a chance to see it.

I don't want to relive the bad, but I could stand to hear more stories like this.

Social media didn't exist. There were no smart phones.

That's the first time I ever texted. It was the only way to reach family.
