Since the AP began in 1936. There have been several three year runs that started out with a great record one year, followed by two consecutive titles. In this case, these runs were two straight titles followed by a season where three straight nearly happened. Georgia is on the brink of history this year if all goes well.

Army tied Notre Dame (9-0-1) during the season but the Cadets remained #1. Army was #1 after all games were played until the final vote went to Notre Dame for the 1946 title.

Alabama in 1966 was Preseason AP #1, then dropped after week one and never saw the top again. The Missing Ring.

2005 USC is self-explanatory. Chances are the BCS title would have been vacated had they won, but the AP would have stayed.

The stupid part is USC being AP #1 in 2003 when the title game was LSU vs Oklahoma

That was the stupid part of every year until they had a real BCS championship game.

I would certainly include 13 bama since they had already gone back to back and were 11-0 in year 3. That's pretty close to me

Also USC won 1 national title in that 3 year span so not super close imo

I hate Alabama but they got screwed in 66. The writers who picked a champion hated the South and wanted to punish the state of Alabama for resisting integration. Which was wrong, but that should have nothing to do with on field results.

Not a repeat but Auburn got screwed in 1983 because I think the writers still hated the Southern teams.

I would argue that the 2004 USC title does not count since it was vacated due to cheating....or really, getting caught cheating.

The stupid part was Oklahoma getting in as BCS #1 after being routed by Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship Game. The final polls going into the BCS Selection Show were as follows:

Associated Press:

#1 USC (11-1)
#2 LSU (12-1)
#3 Oklahoma (12-1)
#4 Michigan (10-2)
#5 Texas (10-2)

AFCA Coaches Poll:

#1 USC (11-1)
#2 LSU (12-1)
#3 Oklahoma (12-1)
#4 Michigan (10-2)
#5 Texas (10-2)

After Oklahoma's 35-7 blowout loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 title games, pollsters had their hands tied as USC, LSU, and Oklahoma were the only one-loss teams in college football. So the lowest they could drop Oklahoma was to third. The BCS computers really punished USC for something they could not control: Hawaii losing to #18 Boise State in the final game of the regular season.

USC had defeated Hawaii earlier in the year rather soundly but because strength of schedule was heavily factored into the computers, Hawaii losing to Boise State at the end of the year hurt USC in the rankings.

So when the final BCS rankings were released on Monday, they looked like this:

#1 Oklahoma (5.11)
#2 LSU (5.99)
#3 USC (6.15)
#4 Michigan (10.63)
#5 Ohio State (14.28)

This despite the fact that USC was #1 in the final round of voting for both human polls in the regular season. LSU certainly belonged in the game, but Oklahoma was undeserving. However, they had built up such a huge lead with their massive margin of victories throughout the season that it was virtually impossible for them to be left out of the title game even with a loss on their record, no matter how lopsided.

So despite the fact that BCS #1 Oklahoma and BCS #2 LSU were competing in the Sugar Bowl for the AFCA Coaches Trophy and the BCS national title, the Associated Press was in no way obligated to vote the winner of that game national champions. So when AP #1 USC defeated AP #4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl, and AP #2 LSU defeated AP #3 Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, the voters of the Associated Press decided to vote Southern California as their national champions for the 2003 college football season. It's as simple as that.

Alabama should have been it. Bias by media over politics as usual.

Mich. St and the Irish played to a draw and they both were ranked ahead of bama. I think bama only gave up like 44 points all year long on defense if I remember correctly.

TYFYS BCS. No way Alabama isn’t in a year later in the playoff in the same scenario.

Yep, although funny enough Bama is the sole reason Georgia can’t break it this season. If they won the SECCG that year they’d be on a 34 game win streak

So we're not talking baseball in this thread?

WTF

Threepeats is a registeted trademark for a reason. Is it basketball? College basketball in particular?

Old man trivia question hereby evoked.

No the stupid part was gay arse Oklahoma getting smashed by k state in big 12 championship and still getting in the title game. 2003 lsu vs usc would've been epic. It also would've given us a Pete vs nick national championship. Instead we just ended up with another big 12 bed shitter

Pat Riley of the Lakers bought the rights to “Three-Peat” IIRC.
