Why is it that everyone all of a sudden is touting Ole Miss as a legit contender for the SEC West? I say they'll go back to being Ole Miss again starting next season.

I do believe that they will no longer be a complete doormat team under Nutt....but they will never be a consistent threat to LSU. The way I see it, instead of being a perrennial 4-8 or 5-7 team, they might upgrade to being a perrennial 6-6 or 7-5 team. They wont travel to the Wyomings of the world and lose anymore. They'll typically take care of their OOC foes. But they will never consistently threaten LSU or Bammer in the SEC.

Sure, just as in the past they will have the occasional great year (which by their standards is 9 wins. And every 10 yrs or so, they'll get a break or a bounce here and there and maybe win 10 games- just like before. Years like that will be far in between though.

They will never be able to compete with all the bigger schools around them for recruits. Its the same reason S Carolina will never be an elite football program no matter who coaches them.

I say to hell with Ole Miss. They will upgrade themselves to being the S Carolina of the SEC West...almost always in fourth place behind the big three over there. Ole Miss' only real chance for success (as in reaching Atlanta) will be for LSU, Bammer, and Auburn to knock each other off and they can maybe sneak in every 10 yrs or so.

Thats as good as it will get for them no matter who is coaching.

Are you going to give any evidence to support your case?

Their QB IS good. But can they keep him surrounded with enough talent to really compete?

Again, I do agree that theyll be a somewhat better program under Nutt...but they will not CONSISTENTLY threaten LSU. Or Bammer.

About 40 yrs of history, along with their location surrounded by bigger schools.

Most of you probably thought the same things about s Carolina a few years ago.

17 returning starters with 13 of them being Seniors says that Ole Miss might be pretty good next year.

Losing Jerry and Oher will be tough. Hardy will probably leave as well. I think their offense will do really well but I could see the defense taking a little step back.

Absolutely they will be good next year.

I think the man is saying that sustained excellence will not happen at OleMiss under Nutt or anyone else. I dont really agree with that, although I dont see OM winning a NC either.

They very well may be. Then again, they may not be. I even admit that if I were to bet on it, I'd say they can very well win 8 games.

But what about the year after? And the year after that? Dont forget that this past season, you had two very dominant linemen.

Probably my post came across as a little more harsh than it was meant to be. I tried to make a point to emphasize the word CONSISTENT. I do not believe that Ole Miss can be a consistent threat to LSU or Bammer. Nutt will amount to one or two extra wins per year on average IMO.

I simply believe that the stars lined up for Ole Miss this past season. It was a once in a decade season.

That's exactly why they've been able to bring in talent every single year, right?

I think Ole miss has an opportunity to be an Arkansas. We have enough money to have some great facilities, and if we could ever win an SEC championship game, we'll be able to put 70-75k people in a stadium. We'll never be an LSU, a Bama, or an Auburn, but I'm not hoping for that. I just want to make a run to the SECCG every now and then.

I dont see them winning the SEC....or even the SEC West for that matter. Possibly they can win the west once in a decade....as I stated earlier.

I think Ole Miss is already what Arkansas has been over the last 10 yrs or so.

I also agree with your entire post depending on how you define "every now and then."

If my aunt had balls she would be my uncle dude.

As far as you know LSU could keep sliding and end up the same as this year. There's no way in the world to tell. Talk to some of the older fellars that are LSU fans and get them to talk with you about the Dinardo years. I guarantee you they never saw LSU football the way it is now. Hell, ten years from now Ole Miss could wind up being alright.

I think once every six years is a totally reasonable expectation for an Ole Miss fan. I dont quite see it happening that often, but I suppose its possible. History suggests otherwise though.
