That's true about statistics in general, not just football. If you don't strongly understand the events behind the stat, it's meaningless. Very few people have the time to look at that much data and really understand it.

Well, yes, by definition "meaningless stats" do in fact mean "NOTHING." That's just elementary English. However, some stats aren't meaningless, but parsing the useful from the meaningless is a chore.
