Taking the CFB Playoff Rankings / BCS Standings, here are the number of teams the SEC had ranked in the Top 12 heading into the final weekend of the regular season, by year:

2010: 4 teams
2011: 4 teams
2012: 6 teams
2013: 4 teams
2014: 3 teams
2015: 2 teams
2016: 1 team

Four teams or more in the Top 12, headed into the final weekend, four seasons in a row... then just 3... then 2.... now 1.

Is this the weakest the SEC has been in a decade?

There is actually a lot of truth in that.

And here's the worst of it.

#13 Auburn will likely lose to Bama this weekend
#15 Florida will likely lose to Florida St. this weekend
#17 Tennessee plays Vandy. Would it shock anyone to see UT lose this game?

We could legitimately have a situation next week in which there is just 1 SEC team in the Top 20.

Should it be in cycles? Not so bad really...

2010 - 4
2014 - 3
2018 - ?

2011 - 4
2015 - 2
2019 - ?

2012 - 6
2016 - 1
2020 - ?

2013 - 4
2017 - ?
2021 - ?

So who is most to blame for this? I'm going to say Phillip Fulmer is most to blame in the end.

Considering during that decade it was the toughest any conference had ever been, that's not that large of a statement.

The bottom line is, LSU, Georgia and Tennessee are down, plus Florida hasn't been nationally relevant for four years (although, if they beat FSU and look competitive with Bama, that might change). If half of those programs get back, the SEC will be back to business as usual.

After the gamecocks shut down clemson they may likely be catapulted into the top 20.

LSU had the best win of any sec team in the year 2000 and that was to Georgia Tech. Can you name a worse year for the sec than that

The longest tenured coaches in the SEC other than Saban.

Dan Mullen
Hugh Freeze
Kevin Sumlin

That's why the league sucks.

Bingo!

The sec coaching is watered down drastically from what it was.

Yep some of the Bama posters on here nailed it. The lack of powerful coaches outside of Saban is the main reason. Same thing with college basketball. The coaches are the main reason. For years I'd hear people throughout the internet and on blogs post about superior talent and athletes in the Southern US. Yes there is truth to that but you also have to coach those athletes and motivate them to be the best football players they can be, not just great athletes. Over the last five years, the SEC has lost big name coaches like Meyer, Miles, Franklin, Spurrier, Richt, Pinkel, Petrino etc. Those were just the head coaches. Also there were quite a few talented coordinators and assistants who left for bigger opportunities/more money and you have the situation y'all are seeing now. It is cyclical but so many were living in denial of that, calling the others haters and morons for stating fact. Sounding just like the dumb libtards we all rally against.

While I tend to a agree, you could also argue that it means the conference is more balanced and teams are knocking each other out of contention. In spite of the perceived weakness, there's a real possibility that the SEC has 12 teams in bowl games. The real measure of the strength of the conference compared to the other conferences will be how well those teams do in the bowl games.

This conference is weak this year regardless of how many teams make mediocre bowl games.

The conference is ripe for the taking though! Make the right hire and shake the place up.

1979.

In fact, from the perspective of the 10 orignal SEC members, 2016 resembles 1979 more than any other in my memory.

Here's a side-by side comparison of the teams ranked by overall record (1979 regular season overall/conference records in italics:

Bama 11-0 (7-0) 11-0 (6-0)
UF 8-2 (6-2) 0-10-1 (0-6)
AU 8-3 (5-2) 8-3 (4-2)
UT 8-3 (4-3) 7-4 (3-3)
UGa 7-4 (4-4) 6-5 (5-1)
LSU 6-4 (4-3) 6-5 (4-2)
UK 6-5 (4-4) 5-6 (3-3)
VU 5-6 (2-5) 1-10 (0-6)
UM 5-6 (2-5) 4-7 (3-3)
MSU 4-7 (2-5) 3-8 (2-4)

Even considering the two obvious outliers in UF and Vandy (both of whom are doing far better this year than in '79) you can see that there's nothing but mediocrity outside of Tuscaloosa County, then as now.

Plus ca change, as the coonasses say.

Yes, the SEC is terrible this season. It was terrible last season too. QB play as a whole is down too.

You can blame whatever you want.. but CFB is cyclical. It's normal.
