Things go in cycles.

Not long after Saban landed at Alabama, from 2010 on, the West has been the beast of the beast, not just Alabama, but most of the rest of the division.

But Uncle Mo, I feel it starting to slide away from the West. Things, they are changing...

Pretty soon, Saban's Alabama will break most of you in the West and it will be a mediocre division again.

2000 was an exceptionally bad year in the SEC. 2000 was arguably the worst SEC season of my lifetime. Highest SEC team finished #10 and had 3 losses.

First thought - that is an incredibly small sample size.

No, what hurt Auburn was refusing to play an AQ OOC.

Based on what?

Florida lost to Kentucky. Georgia can't beat Alabama. Missouri will be terrible next year without Lock. Vanderbilt will suck with Shurmur. Tennessee is losing recruiting battles to Arkansas on players from the state of Tennessee. (to say that is unheard of is an understatement) The East will be worse next year than it was this season. The West is building back.

I could have sworn LSU won the Natty in 2003.

That doesn't mean the rest of the division wasn't mediocre.

It was.

It appears I triggered a response thread without even trying, fwiw. I was going to make this into something completely different.

Imagine what Nick Saban could have won if he coached in the SEC back then

What hurt auburn in 2004 is having two programs that drew higher ratings also undefeated.

You switch Oklahoma and auburns schedules and Oklahoma still goes to the NC game.

2000 was a bad year for the SEC in general. LSU's win over Georgia Tech in the Chick Fil-A Bowl was the only OOC win all year for the entire conference over a team that finished ranked in the polls. In 2001 the SEC was the best conference by far but 2002 was another mediocre year for the conference. Auburn did beat Penn St. and Arkansas beat Boise St. but Georgia's Sugar Bowl win over Florida St. was the only other OOC win over a team that finished ranked. In 2003 the SEC was probably the best conference but the East admittingly did most of the work.....LSU's BCS national title not withstanding.
