It seems the same programs make the NIT every year. It also seems the SEC possesses many of these "perennial NIT" type programs.

Sure enough, since 1995, the SEC leads the other Power 5 conferences in average number of NIT bids per school.

Average Number of NIT bids per school since 1995:
SEC- 5.14 bids per school
ACC- 4.67 bids per school
BIG 10- 4.64 bids per school
PAC 12- 3.5 bids per school
BIG 12- 2.7 bids per school

*This counts current programs in each conference, so for examples, all of Missouri's NIT bids are counted towards the SEC's numbers, as are all the other expansion teams of the past 20 years or so.

Alabama is tied for first in the nation in number of NIT bids since 1995 with 9 NIT appearances. Georgia follows closely behind with 8. Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt each have 7. Auburn, Mississippi State, Missouri and Tennessee each have 5.

Every current SEC program has played in at least 2 NIT's since 1995: Arkansas, Kentucky, and Texas A&M have played in the fewest NIT's with just 2 appearances each.

There are only four Power 5 programs nationally who have not played in a single NIT since at least 1995: Duke, Kansas, Texas, and UCLA.

To me, this is SEC basketball in a nutshell: Good, but not great. Most teams NIT worthy each year, but not worthy of the NCAA.

For Texas and UCLA, that means they have bombed out in their down years, and I know they have had some recent down years.

SEC BTW has tGOAT NIT coach.

HANG THE BANNER

In all seriousness, we've
- been to 9 NITs and 7 NCAA Tournaments since 1995
- won 17+ games 19 of the 23 years since 1995
- won 19+ games 12 of the 23 years since 1995
- won 20+ games 9 of the 23 years since 1995
- won 22+ games 6 of the 23 years since 1995
- won 25+ games 3 of the 23 years since 1995

Since 2001 we've won 17+ games 16 of 17 seasons.

So, basically, we almost always win between 17-20 games a year, which is squarely on the NCAA/NIT cut line. Always above average, never great.

Sigh

This. Arkansas has been about as down as anyone. Their lack of NIT appearances is certainly not due to resounding NCAAB berths. We are either hot or not.

6 of them were between 1995 and 2001

Only 5 over the 16 year period from 2002 - 2017, with 3 of them clumped together from 2005-2008. 2 appearances over the last 9 years (since 2009).

Since those 2 are in the last 3 years this is a little deceiving.

Woohoo... we got to keep our vacated 2002.
Unfortunately, the self imposed 2003 absence could have pushed us out of the 4 way tie.

Ugh... so depressing to know that UGA will continue to embody the context of this post for the foreseeable future.

Just horrible. Grant was kind of a disaster. Gottfried had to go for a couple of reasons, but Grant was the epitome of meh.

I'm not one to bank on "next year" particularly for Alabama basketball. However, with the base that is returning next year plus the addition of Sexton, Petty and some potential depth guys, Alabama really should be back in the tournament. If not, Avery is going to lose momentum and people are going to start getting impatient.

It's still crazy that over that period of total meh we only had 1 losing season.

So many 16-19 win seasons with the NIT or nothing.
