I agree.
However, the Admiral appeared in The Return of the Jedi, a movie which George Lucas wrote and owns copyright to. I believe Lucas either asked for too high a price for Mississippi to pay for rights to use his creation, or he simply did not allow it.
You'd be amazed at all the Star Wars shite Lucas copyrighted, sounds, visual effects, charcters... He may have sucked as a director, but he was a marketing genius.

Alright, I'm going to say something here. I am really tired of reading about the "PC police". You do realize that it's not a good thing to call a black person a "n*****"? You do realize that it is not cool to walk around dressed up as a Nazi? You do understand why jokes about "wife-beating" are not funny? Sometimes I wonder.
Ole Miss' mascot tradition was based on a figure that represented the Confederacy. For those of you who fell asleep in history class, slavery, practiced primarily in the south, would have continued unabated for who knows how long had the south prevailed. Hey, the KKK certainly knows what the Rebel flag means and that's why they fly it front and center at their rallies. Why is it so hard for some of you to understand this?

I happen to agree with you on this and why I thought Admiral Ackbar would be such a great choice for them....to my mind Lucas is being a phony liberal jerk.....
The Louisiana Tiger nickname was earned in blood, not only in the Civil War but at places like Anzio and the Colmar Pocket....and in Iraq....it needs to be defended!!!!

You are being pretty defensful over this black bear thing.
I think the bear is pretty weak considering the effort that was put into this campaign. This has been going on for a while now and all they could come up with is a bear? Better yet, a shoneys/care bear look a like? I think the lack of creativity is the funny thing here.

This Faulkner passage, describing the ability of youth to believe that all things are possible, never fails to raise the hairs on the back of my neck every time I read it:
For every Southern boy fourteen years old, not once but whenever he wants it, there is the instant when it’s still not yet two o’clock on that July afternoon in 1863, the brigades are in position behind the rail fence, the guns are laid and ready in the woods and the furled flags are already loosened to break out and Pickett himself with his long oiled ringlets and his hat in one hand probably and his sword in the other looking up the hill waiting for Longstreet to give the word and it’s all in the balance, it hasn’t happened yet, it hasn’t even begun yet, it not only hasn’t begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin against that position and those circumstances which made more men than Garnett and Kemper and Armistead and Wilcox look grave yet it’s going to begin, we all know that, we have come too far with too much at stake and that moment doesn’t need even a fourteen-year-old boy to think This time. Maybe this time with all this much to lose than all this much to gain: Pennsylvania, Maryland, the world, the golden dome of Washington itself to crown with desperate and unbelievable victory the desperate gamble, the cast made two years ago…
–William Faulkner, Intruder in the Dust
And now, the University of Mississippi is pissing all over this.
I hope the Louisiana Tigers beat the snot out of the "Bears" next month.

I thought it was a cool choice considering the history of the black bear. I also think a black bear is a pretty cool and relevant animal in the South.

That is not a logo. That is not going to be printed on stuff. That is a sketch of the mascot's costume. I'm sure it will be better than that.
I never defend Ole Miss' athletic programs. Ever. I just think that people are fricking with them because they are Ole Miss and in the process are coming off as really stupid.

Oh, I got no problem at all with any of this.
I think the Louisiana Black Bear is great.
I just think it's funny as hell that the University of Mississippi chose the Louisiana Black Bear as their mascot.
And if you read about the history of Teddy Roosevelts hunting trips to Mississippi and Louisiana, it really says all you need to know about the difference between Louisiana and Mississippi.
Mississippi:
quote:LINK
Nearly 100 years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt, went on a bear hunt. He enjoyed nature and being out in the woods where animals lived. Because he was the President of the United States, the people organizing the hunt wanted to make sure the hunt was successful.
But after 3 days of walking and climbing and riding, no bears were found. Now what? The President's bear hunt would be a failure!
The next day the hunt guide and his hunting dogs finally found an old bear. The dogs and guide followed the bear for quite a distance until the bear was very, very tired. The dogs attacked and injured the old bear. The guides tied the bear to a tree and called for the President. Here was a bear for him to shoot!
President Roosevelt looked at the poor old bear and said "no!" No one would shoot this old bear for sport. That would not be right. However, the bear was injured and suffering. President Roosevelt ordered that the bear be put down to end its pain.
Louisiana:
quote:LINK
One hundred years ago, President Teddy Roosevelt went on a bear hunt near Tallulah, La., as guest of John Parker and John A. McIlhenny, and that time he was successful.
“We got three bears, six deer, one wild turkey, twelve squirrels, one duck, one opossum, and one wildcat. We ate them all except the wildcat, and there were times when we almost felt as if we could eat it. I think it is a pretty good record. I am perfectly satisfied.”
that was Roosevelt's summary of the results of his hunt on Bayou Tensas and Bear Lake at the Bear Lake Hunting Club in October 1907.
Satisfied he was, for he vowed after his 1902 Mississippi bear hunt that he would return to the Southland for another try. That hunt, however, ended in disappointment when he refused to shoot a bear that had been lassoed and tied to a tree.
Such a kill would be unsportsmanlike, and he knew the press would play havoc with him. They did anyway, because the incident created a media frenzy when Clifford Berryman drew a cartoon of the President refusing to shoot the helpless bear.
After the Mississippi bear hunt, he remarked that he “was especially anxious to kill a bear in these cane-brakes after the fashion of the old southern planters, who for a century past have followed the bear with horse and hound and horn in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas.”
For his Louisiana hunt, he was guided by the two Metcalfe brothers and Holt Collier. Joining these three was another legendary bear hunter: Ben Lilly. For 13 days, from dawn to dusk, he was in the saddle, except for one or two days lost on account of rain. And his bronzed skin bore evidence of his hard work, as did his clothes, which were tattered from contact with the cane and other brush.
“Was the 'possum good?” the president was asked.
“Absolutely, the best dish we had, except bear liver,” he responded with relish.

I know thats not going to be the logo but I bet it will be printed on merchandise. I know they are still the rebels but the bear thing just seem a little off to me.

He got his nickname Teddy for NOT shooting the lassoed bear in Mississippi. That is all people are claiming.
I have to stop defending this. People aren't going to open their fricking eyes.

Will the Ole Miss Band now play Elvis Presley's "Teddy Bear" as they run on to the field?

correct.
It is the university's intent to use the "Ole Miss" script logo as the official logo, while all of the "unofficial" merchandise at alllll the stores around Oxford will still carry the Colonel Reb logo stuff. The Black Bear is literally just a mascot AS OF NOW.
Maybe in a few years people may embrace the bear, but as of now it will be limited to sideline duty.

Ole Miss Rebel = Racially insensitive mascot for a Southern school.
UNLV Runnin' Rebel = Cool as hell mascot for a West Coast school.
Exact same Rebel, Ole Miss had to ditch it, UNLV will never ditch it.
See what happens when you put liberals in charge!

I think the Teddy Bear got its name from Teddy Roosevelt, not the other way around.
My point was that Teddy goes down to Misissippi and has a TERRIBLE time. then he goes down to Louisiana and has a GREAT time.

So is The Grove going to be renamed?

It will all pass. Southern Miss used to be the "Confederates" and had General Nat (for Nathan Bedford Forrest). They changed to the Golden Eagles. Ole Miss will get over. But, if you are going to have a Black Bear as your mascot, shouldn't the son of a bitch at least be black?
