Is inject optimism into the program. That's it.
On field results are the same.
People will say that Butch has recruited better, but judging recruits before they play is like judging baseball draft picks when they are drafted. We can't judge how recruiting classes did until they have multiple seasons on the field under their belt.
So as far as things that can be measured, the only thing Butch has done differently is hype. But its all hollow until on field results are there.
Even then the hype is not that much different. There was a lot of hype behind Dooley after they beat NC State in 2012.

Tennessee has a head coach?

Shite, so we aren't going to be good this year?! Darnit!

Dooley's bowl game performance was a thing of magic. Butch's was far inferior. So, subtract the optimism point. They're dead even.

Nice to see that CBJ has captured everyone's attention. So much fear instilled in so little time.

No they aren't. Dooley had a losing record every year and didn't go to a bowl in year 2 or year 3. The program was getting worse every season under him. Dooley never beat a ranked team much less a top 5 team.

If you think the talent level at Tennessee is anywhere similar to what was here from 2012-2014 (when Dooley's recruits became upper classmen)
Butch is in his third year with only two full recruiting classes of his guys yet his recruits make up 90% of the two deep. I could count on one hand the number of difference makers on the 2015 roster that were recruited by Dooley.

Dooley lost to Kentucky to end 2011, in the process, missing a bowl and breaking the longest winning streak in CFB at the time. Tennessee wasn't ranked in the preseason polls and Dooley's entire defensive staff had jumped ship in the offseason. Boy, we were fired up

Butch has actually improved the team from one year to the next (2014 UT was much better than 2013 UT.) And the players actually want to play for him, unlike when several players decided to throw the UK game in 2011 because they simply didn't want to play for Dooley.

Are y'all serious right now?
I know the cool thing is to hate on Tennessee, but Butch is making serious moves.
-They bring back 17 starters from a young team that went 7-6 last year with 4 wins in their last 5 games.
- Dobbs is the real deal and I won't argue over this. What he did against all power 5 competition is MUCH more impressive than what Jeremy Johnson did at home against Arkansas's weak secondary in the first half of the first game of the 2014 season.
- They have one of the top 3 WR corps in the SEC based on production, experience, and talent
- They actually have experience at OL now
- Hurd is a beast and doesn't get much credit for what he did behind that same inexperienced and awful OL last year. Kamara is the #1 overall JUCO player and will help Tennessee become a three headed dragon in the run game.
- They have stars on every level of their defense: DL Barnett/Maggitt LB Maggitt/Reeves-Maybin, DB - Sutton and 2 senior safeties that have played in at least 36 games with at least 188 tackles a piece. Oh, and despite what you say, true freshman McKenzie looks like one of the most college ready DTs that I have ever seen.
If you follow recruiting, they are building for the now, and the future. They've convinced Jennings to move to WR and have some pretty good looking true freshman QBs. Also have another top level QB committed for next year and are early favorites for some top level QBs in the next 2 years.
Look, sleep on Butch if you want, but I love what I'm seeing over at Tennessee. In 2016, they are the team to beat in the East and possibly the whole of the SEC (along with LSU of course )

Dooley had about as much business being a head coach of an SEC school as a screen door on a submarine.

This year's defense returns 18 of the 22 from the two deep and adds the following guys:
Dillon Bates
Kahlil McKenzie
Justin Martin
Shy Tuttle
Kyle Phillips
Darren Kirkland
Austin Smith
Several freshman like Todd Kelly Jr, Rashaun Gaulden, Evan Berry, and Cortez McDowell should make a jump like Jalen Reeves Maybin (#8 in the SEC in tackles) did as a sophomore. Other freshman who didn't play such as Dimarya Mixon and Kendall Vickers should be ready to help as well. We'll have more than 3 DTs to rotate this year.
