The Michigan "time management" screw up from a coaching perspective

We have all seen the last 10 seconds of the Michigan vs. Michigan State game over and over again. Being a Wolverine fan from my brief time living in Detroit, Michigan I kept wondering over and over IF..... there was a way Harbaugh could have "ran" 10 more seconds off the clock or at least 6-7 seconds so all he would have had to do was snap the ball and run another play - without punting. Here goes:
1. Harbaugh calling 2 timeouts on his teams last possession cost his team a precious 2 seconds. 1 second each per timeout. Why the hell call a timeout anyway is beyond me but I'm not getting paid millions of dollars to make those "decisions."
2. Why not just run a time consuming sweep play or drop back and wait for defense to come to you. Each play is going to lose yardage but each play will also take at least another 2-3 more precious seconds off the clock per play. As it was his run up the gut mentality only used 5 seconds per play for 3 plays. That's another 6 seconds easy.
So you are left with 2 seconds max. on the game clock and you have 4th down. Simply drop back and wait a second or two then take a knee. Game over!
In closing as good a coach as Jim Harbaugh is that was the worst clock management in the history of college football - and it cost him and his team a possible shot at a national championship. I couldn't help but laugh watching the replay as he waited.... and waited.... and waited before calling those 2 timeouts on the last drive. He looked so smart doing it at the time and ended up looking so dumb in the end. Hopefully he will learn from it. I know I did. Geaux Blue!

Why not just get a non-chickenshit punter?

Good point! I got nothing on that comeback. However, from a coaching perspective it would have been nice to not have to worry about punting at all. I guarantee that one play alone will change the way coaches try to run out the clock in the future - or it should. There was no reason UofM should have punted that football to begin with. Just trying to let out some frustration....

I honestly think the coaches were too caught up in the moment and didn't realize there was going to be time left until 3rd down and it was too late then.

looked to me like the punt was gonna be blocked anyway

This. Should have called a QB pooch kick or something to keep the pressure off

1. Punting isn't rocket science. Quit over thinking this. Snap the ball, catch , punt. go home. It couldn't have been easier.
2. Run a "time consuming play"? Hell the punter couldn't hold on to the ball standing still, you don't think a QB running around couldn't have possibly dropped it?
3. Calling timeouts cost them 0 seconds. In fact, he may have even netted a second or 2.
In closing, there is nothing else he could have done. Every other coach in America would have done the same, especially with a punter who had been booming them nicely all night.

At least he didn't try a field goal.

He he could have just fell on it instead of that crap he pulled but he panicked and pissed the game away.

Have your QB take the snap, roll out to the sideline for 3 seconds, then heave it as far as he can down field but to the sideline. End of 10 seconds. Game.

Again, you're over thinking this.
The QB could stumble, a LA Clint Stoerner, anything.
The punt was THE most obvious and safe thing to do. Remember a throw down field results in an incomplete pass, MSU would get the ball at mid field, as opposed to a punt that they would get the ball around the 20.

Hey, remember when Michigan lost to App State? That was pretty funny.

This is retarded.

It would be fairly easy to run off 10 seconds if the QB takes the snap and rolls out and throws the ball high and down field out of bounds.

If you are an LSU fan and that is the worst clock management you have ever seen, you must be a toddler.

And how much time would a punt run off? Not to mention the clock doesn't generally stop running until the ball comes to a complete stop, not just when it hits the ground like a incomplete pass.
Nope, punting the obvious choice again.
