We are entering the era of fast football. Where big/strong players are not used as much. Where power running will be a thing of the past. No longer will those big physical atheletes have a sport to play except wrestling or weight lifting competitions.

Now it's all about who has the fastest players and who has the most luck with trick plays. They are taking physicality out of football with all of the new rules. Defensive players are now handicapped and defensive schemes are no longer effective or useful. Everyone just recruits offense now.

I hate where football is going. Its reminding more and more of basketball and its starting to adopt the playoff system. Next thing you know, there will be a 64 team playoff in football and the regular season wont matter. It will just be a bloated mess.

Look back to this post in 20 years and you will realize I was right and will be seeking answers.

It is the "college football is better when Texas/Ohio St/Alabama/Michigan/etc. is better" crowd. Basically a bunch of front runner fans.

Fournette and Chubb laugh at your premise.

And you're killing everyone's father.

Each Saturday I watch Arkansas and the best SEC game now and that's usually all.
I'm glad I'm a senior citizen now. There won't be football in another 40 years. Too dangerous for a pussified America.

I agree with the original poster. That TCU-TTech game, or that game on Thursday night whoever it was with both teams well in the 50’s and 150 passes thrown is just nauseating. How can you score 50+ points and not win a game? I hate that style of football.

The tree killers, tea baggers, etc. are properly called "Updykes".

Bammers are the next layer above Updykes in the Bama fan hierarchy. They are either not sufficiently deranged or are just too drunk/stupid/lazy to commit atrocities on that level.

While I wouldn't be as hopeless and despondent as you are about it, I do think you have a point here. Greg McElroy and Taylor Zarzour were talking about this this morning on The First Team, using the TCU-Texas Tech 55-52 game as an example. That game, where both teams moved up and down the field at will and there was no defense, just didn't feel like real football. There's a reason not many people watch the Arena League.

That said, I think this can be improved a lot with a few easy fixes. First, they've got to get much stricter in penalizing linemen downfield on pass plays. Defenders have to be able to read a lineman's behavior as a run/pass key. Second, defenses have to be given ample time to substitute personnel between plays. Run as wide open an offense as you want, but give the defense a chance to set up and try to stop you. Finally, ease up on the ticky-tack personal foul and pass interference penalties. Obviously call the blatant ones, but give the defender the benefit of the doubt in the marginal cases. Doing these three things would vastly improve the game without making everyone run the power I.

No, football changed when it stopped being 11 vs 10!!!

Now, I'm not a fan of the spread offense; but I have to agree that it has made playing defense a NIGHTMARE for the simple fact that the QB position is now a "running back who throws the ball".......and D-Coord's haven't figured it out just yet.

In the "Football we all know and Love", it was easy for the defense to blitz and play downhill towards the QB EVERY play. The QB wasn't mobile, and if he was, he surely wasn't as dynamic of the threat we see today.

It isn't the "spread" offense necessarily; it's really the "mobile" QB's that has changed the game.....!!! That half-a-second that a defensive player has to think/process/diagnose a play becomes crippling, especially when 10 other players are all having to do it as well........

At this point, the 4-2-5 defense has really been the only defense that can successfully slow down the spread....but I imagine someone create a scheme (whether new or modified) that will put an end to the spread offense......
