I've taught Vandy kids before (Harvard kids too). Trust me, it's not a stretch to say there are plenty of dumbasses at Vandy. tRant really misunderstands and overestimates the student body there. They have dummies, dumbasses who are there because daddy can afford tuition and they live in Nashville and went to one of the various private schools, regular students from all over the state and nation (some smart but some dumb), specific students recruited to boost the prestige level, foreign students and on and on. IOW, while they have a great rep. they have the same mix in terms of intelligence as anyone else.

Like others in their niche (UVA, for example) what makes Vandy special is the alumni network which is too good to pass up unless you're being offered by a real Ivy or somewhere Stanford. Those alumni networks make it worth the cost. But perception rather than reality drives popular rankings -- that and a few admissions tricks that schools use.

Now Vandy's burn unit is second to none as are a few specific departments. Also, don't think for a second I'm dissing anyone. I think Vandy is a great university but they do have an outsized reputation which while well deserved in the past is now greatly overstated (tuition and universities catching up has changed things in a positive way).

To follow up on Prof's post, private schools usually are 2 distinct separate schools

School A is academic and challenging

School B is legacy and donations (not always good students but in because of legacy or "donations") and not always filled with the sharpest tools in the shed.

Interestingly enough, 2 public schools (UVA and UM) are more "private" than most private schools.

Vanderbilt is no different in having its share of of idiot 3rd generation type folks and lately it seems a repository for asian folks (which makes me wonder what it will look like a generation or 2 from now) but may mean it is the incubator to welcoming our Chinese Overlords in 20 - 40 years (when I will be dead and gone) and the USA will be a wholly owned subsidiary of China Inc.

All that said, VU is the best schooling the SEC to locate a quality wife that will hold her looks as she ages and she will be good for conversation long after her physical assets have fully depreciated.

as for the anti Dobbs, think of Highlander is that there can be only 1 (eyebrow) and his name is Anthony Davis.
