There is every reason to believe this college football season will be as great and exciting as any other. Last year set the bar high with Clemson exacting national title game revenge on Alabama in one of the best national championship contests ever. There are many compelling storylines and electrifying players to keep an eye on as the first Saturday with college football in nearly eight months approaches this week.

Here is the 247Sports Power Poll, with a preseason Top 25 reflecting a mix of a factors. The first is the preseason rankings produced by the model that assigns every FBS team a rating, based on their performance last year and the returning production and talent this year. The second is a projection, using those preseason ratings, which are used to project the outcome of every game this upcoming regular season, of how the season will actually play out. Things like a team’s strength of schedule, where a team plays a key opponent and when a key game happens can all affect a team’s standing here. The Power Poll is below:

25. Notre Dame
24. Houston
23. Oregon
22. TCU
21. Miami
20. Toledo
19. Michigan (someone finally recognizes their shortcomings)
18. NC State

quote:

17. Florida

The Gators’ quarterback competition is not over with their opener against Michigan in Arlington less than two weeks away. Graduate transfer Malik Zaire, incumbent Luke Del Rio and redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks are still battling for the job. Florida has eight other starters back on offense and, while it loses a lot on defense, should still be solid there.

16. Virginia Tech
15. Oklahoma State

quote:

14. Auburn

Led by Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson, the Tigers had one of the country’s best running games last year. Both are back and the offense adds in Jarrett Stidham, who transfers in from a junior college after an extremely efficient but brief stint as Baylor’s starter as a freshman in 2015. The Tigers might be Alabama’s toughest competition in the SEC West, and get the Tide at home this year.

13. Texas
quote:

12. Georgia

Nick Chubb and Sony Michel are back, meaning the Bulldogs will have arguably the nation’s best backfield, and Jacob Eason has a year of experience under his belt at quarterback. Georgia brings back a whopping 10 starters on defense and has a great chance to get back to the SEC championship game this year.

11. Penn State
10. Wisconsin

quote:

9. LSU

The Tigers took the interim tag off Ed Orgeron this offseason and Derrius Guice, arguably the nation’s best running back, returns. LSU loses five of its top six pass-catchers and top five tacklers from a year ago but the always-talented Tigers will be a force to be reckoned with once again in the SEC.

8. Louisville
7. Clemson
6. Washington
5. Oklahoma
4. Ohio State
3. Florida State
2. USC

quote:

1. Alabama

Jalen Hurts is back after a sensational freshman season, as is Bo Scarbrough and a deep stable of extremely talented running backs. The Tide lose three of their top receivers and some key pieces on defense but Alabama is always ready to reload on that side of the ball and Calvin Ridley is one of the nation’s top wideouts.

Gun to my head I think LSU finishes between 10-15. 10-3 sounds right

List is shite. UGA at 12 is so much fun because the melt will be so awesome when they end the year unranked again.

I think it could make sense in that AU could have more total losses than LSU, while still being competition in the West to Bama. AU plays Clemson on the road. LSU doesn't have anyone like that on their OOC schedule, so, if AU were to lose that game and 1 SEC game, while LSU loses 2 SEC games, then a 1 SEC loss AU would be Bama's biggest competition for the West (assuming Bama had 1 SEC loss or less at the time of the Iron Bowl).

But I get your overall point and I expect AU to beat LSU anyway, so you'll be ranked higher soon enough.

How the frick could someone put Louisville ahead of LSU? Preseason polls that try to anticipate records and final standings are inherently biased and bullshite. fricking ND?

Moving on, by my own arguments I think the fair preseason ranking should have Auburn ahead of LSU.... based on power of each TEAM, not what I think will make me look smart in January.

I don't see how anyone could justify that. UL has no OL this year; Jackson won't finish every game, if he even finishes the season.

That's without the little fact of that arse-kicking LSU just gave them.

Interesting. Gamecocks finishing the season ranked, huh?

No. Not because they won't win 6 or 7 games (possible), but because 3 of their last four regular season games are going to be beatings that will take all the shine off of whatever they've accomplished, much like last year. USCe won't be ranked when it finishes the season on a dive getting clobbered by UGA, UF and Clemson.

I'm about 99% sure Corona does not write for BamaOnline. He's a Texas grad who is a 247 National Writer I think.

Etling will be much improved. Ppl didn't know that he played last year with no feeling in his foot. Hurt is mechanics and confidence as Canada said. He actually did well considering. We're stacked on D I mean really stacked. And of course guice is a beast. Oline will be fine if our tackles stay healthy. Imo it's a toss up between Lsu and auburn rt now as to who's the 2nd best n the west.

That's pretty much how every poll is. This is just a different way to look at things. There's a reason it's not one of the main polls that gets looked at.
