IMO UGA can never have enough money but that's me
If UGA was spending Saban-money on a coach, renovating the stadium, buying new jets, etc. I could see it. But I mean isn't UGA one of the most profitable ADs not just in the sec but in America right now? And I mean yall still won't even shell out the money for an IPF (not a dig, we don't have one either). So I guess what I'm saying is what's the point? If you've got super duper money or mega super duper money...what's the difference if all you're doing is hording it?

I don't think it does diddly to tradition
Oh, but it does. Instead of calling it the cocktail party, now it'll be "the annual florida/georgia game sponsored by Zaxby's" or some other nonsense. Look at the peach bowl..that was a traditional bowl that was cool, then CFA stepped in (I love CFA btw don't get me wrong) and made it the "chick fil a peach bowl" then they eventually threw enough money to where it's now just the "chick fil a bowl".
Same with traditional citrus bowl..to capitalone citrus bowl...to capitalone bowl. Sponsorships are just the beginning my friend.

Use it on baseball, basketball, and the title ix sports. I don't care if we have enough, I'd rather UGA sit on a shite pile of cash even it has no use. Georgia can never do too well for my liking.
And then when we get bored of Mark we can hire Saban.

Name changes don't really bug me I guess. Not to mention GA/FLA hasn't been called "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" since both schools agreed to stop officially calling it that. Yet the name remains. I don't think a sponsor ruins that. It can be the GA/FLA classic sponsored by Charmin but people will still call it the WLOCP.

And yet they wonder why players want to start a union.
Very true.
This is from the Texas AD just the other day
quote:
"There's a lot of great tradition with Texas A&M. At some point in time, does it make some business sense, some branding sense to play again? I don't know," Patterson said. "It's not at the top of my list. I'm really more focused on how we grow the footprint of the department."
The first-year athletic director has already scheduled a men's basketball game against Washington in China for 2015, and the program will participate in a three-city basketball event with Michigan State, North Carolina and Florida in 2018.
Patterson is focused on finding similar opportunities for Texas football, and for that reason he's in no hurry to reunite with Texas A&M.
He sees Texas as being in a unique position to grow its international brand and said it's essential to use athletics as a platform to tell the university's story.
"They shouldn't be done for junketeering purposes," Patterson said. "They should be done in a fashion that grows the profile and the interest of the university of a broad scale internationally."
Patterson reportedly has expressed interest in playing a nonconference football game in Mexico City. Another possibility Patterson acknowledged Tuesday could be a future sporting event in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
"We have a lot of folks in the oil and gas industry," Patterson said. "Houston is the center of the world in terms of the gas industry. A lot of those alums spend time in the Middle East, and Dubai is a place that wants to use sports to he conversations, and we'll see where they lead."

I had to look up the word junketeer to see what the hell he meant.

I may be wrong but he seems to be admitting that the athletes are essentially employees who are not going to travel to other venues unless it first benefits the university.
So local instate rivalries are out b/c he sees them as a waste of money that are more for the players having fun than the school's quest for more money.

Bidding war between Walmart and Bass Pro for Mizzou Pigkansas game

I guess you're right, i just get a bad vibe. I don't like change, especially changing things so longstanding.

I get it and a lot of people will fear the loss of tradition. But I have never been afraid to say that I am cool with shady recruiting practices, cut throat decisions, and doing generally anything to better the Georgia program

Me too, wholeheartedly. I want to bring back our lawless, free wheeling, free swinging attitude of discipline under Urbs. But I do like tradition, and changing the name just seems iffy to me.

TSIO sponsored by Preparation H since it makes so many opposing fans butthurt.

Looks like we would get to choose the name.
Oh and we already settled on the Battle for the Golden Shopping Cart.

Not exactly the same thing but Carolina and Clemson play for the Hardee's trophy. So that game is getting there. The game itself used to be called Big Thursday when it was played on Thanksgiving but now people just call it the Carolina/Clemson game.

I think only the TV people (maybe) and State Farm really called the A&M/texas game the "Lone Star Showdown" - perhaps some promotional material from the universities - certainly not many of the fans.
It's probably only a matter of time before the RRS is moved to JerryWorld, aka AT&T Stadium - and that would be a shame. I hope it stays at the Cotton Bowl forever (and perhaps struck by a meteor every year). That can be part of the problem with always chasing the money.
And as many other posters have said, people wonder why some players want to enter into collective bargaining.

I would be OK with the Bacardi Bowl or the Seagrams Showdown. Maybe the Bud Border Battle?

A Mississippi company tried to do something along the lines of the Lone Star Showdown, where they sponsored the rivalry between State and Ole Miss and each team got points for wins in each sport, and at the end of the season, the team with the most points gets a rivalry trophy or something.
Neither school was interested.

It looks like AT&T is writing a check to OU and TX as a defensive marketing tactic. They spent a ton of bucks naming Jerry World so what's a few more million to keep a rival from getting their name on the game.
It's a win for both schools and for AT&T

Our Border War games were sponsored by State Farm back when they existed. One good thing about these sponsored games is there is always a trophy, sometimes an abomination procured by the sponsor. For Exhibit A, see the Cy/Hawk trophy sponsored by some Iowa Corn Growers Association:

I swear if the Iron bowl goes under the name of something dumb like the
Coke Zero or Golden Flake Iron Bowl I'm gonna kick Mark Richt in his non existent balls. The iron bowl is a sacred game that doesn't need to be touched by outside entities.
