That is an urban legend like the corndog thing. They bailed on us.
Actually, the original 10-year contract was honored by both teams, 1986-1995.
A fact few seem to want to realize.

LSU Scurred

LSU eventually refused to play the final two games and the schools settled the matter for $100,000. Attempts by LSU to renew the series have been rebuffed, insiders say, because of lingering hard feelings over breaking the contract.

Disappointing, but some of you fans of other SEC schools might need to look in the mirror with some of these comments

I'm not even going to try to defend this. Pathetic.

LSU got pushed around in scheduling by University of Louisiana behind the scenes I think. Getting pushed around in regards to scheduling with A&M is a common theme for them

Dude, it was a 10-year contract, with a 2-year extension. When the SEC went to 8 games in 92, LSU honored the last 4 years of the original agreement, but asked to cancel the extension. Aggies demanded a replacement as per the terms of the contract extension, LSU offered up USL. After A&M lost to USL, they wanted their money back due to USL not being a suitable replacement.
Stupid.
fricking.
Aggies.
From your link:
That move sparked some friction between the schools, which contributed to them not renewing the series. With the SEC going to a divisional format and eight conference games in 1992, then-LSU Athletic Director Joe Dean said he couldn't afford to give up one of three non-conference home games every year.
"You've almost got to have seven home games to pay the bills," Dean said. "That's all it was."

It was USL, and it was 1996...
...and the aggies LOST.
That's the only reason they didn't think it was a suitable replacement.
So all this trash talk from them about us losing to Georgia Southern...and they lost to USL (who)?

USL wasn't FCS and it was on the road.

Did Tupac die the week before you played GA Southern? Didn't think so. We never had a chance

I thought he was still alive?

Well the deal was made back in the Big 12 days. Hell that SEC West schedule is eating them up. Do you blame aTm for not wanting Oregon and the SEC West schedule.

LSU did it a few years ago.

I don't understand why we don't try to schedule more games like this tbh. Don't even care if we lose it. If the game would be played early in the season, it won't hurt as bad and will help more plus it would be a more in demand game with higher revenues than playing a team like lamar. Lots of upsides to it imo.

aTm realized that their scoreboard doesn't go up to 3 digits, so it would be problematic keeping track of Oregon's points.

Of course, if you begin to drop like Tennessee did, it's got the opposite effect. Getting your teeth kicked in by prominent OOC opponents helps to speed the perception that the program is in trouble; and if your recruits think this, it is.
Really, it seems like the ideal is to predict what tier you will be in your own conference, and try to schedule a big conference opponent 1 tier lower. You should still win, but your foe is (likely) a bowl team and it looks good. I wonder if Oregon was trying to do that.

From fbschedules.com, aTm claims they will replace Oregon with a "comparable" opponent.
My money's on Purdue or Kansas.

I'd like to see bigger ooc matchup, and it would obviously draw a bigger national audience including recruits (across the nation) watching the game, tv advertising, ticket sales, national branding ect not just in Texas, so IDK, it's probably a double edge sword, but I don't like to see us back down from that kind of marquee game regardless.
