Notre Dame responds: On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te'o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

If they were told on 12/26, why did they run a 3+ minute segment with interviews from Manti talking it up on 1/7? They're "still looking into who did it," it sounds like deadspin has figured out exactly who did it. And it's someone Manti already knew, but we're expected to believe he wasn't in on it? Even though there was no car crash? No cancer? No phone conversations? And the picture was somone he's never met?

And we're supposed to believe he wasn't in on it?

more gold from irishenvy

What would have been accomplished by announcing the hoax immediately? Is it scandalous if they kept it under wraps in the hope of saving Te'o some embarrassment?

Definitely needs to be played up as the innocent victim. Even if he isn't. And I really hope he is.

Well, if you believe their statement Manti is pretty much the victim...

i can see this being what went down

*Manti is probably gay (not that there's anything wrong with that)
*Created a fake girlfriend to appease his family and teammates
*When football season started to look up, he killed her off.
*media ran with it to sell the ND story
*No way Manti could stop it by then

Love to see how he can explain he met her after the Stanford game in 2009 as he claimed before. Interesting he NEVER mentioned that she was an internet friend either, the way he talked about her it sounded like they were likely to be married.

Te'o is going to burn hard for this, as will ND.

Bad deal all the way around. Your fake girlfriend dies and then get your arse kicked in the title game.

Manti's chances of getting his own Mormon planet looking slim.
