The first thing I thought of was the high school football player a few years ago who made up a tale about being recruited by a couple of D1 programs. They had a signing ceremony at his school with all the students in the gym and everything. A local reporter called the University for a comment, and they told her they'd never heard of the kid. It all unraveled quickly then. Basically, a lie for attention gets too big, and you have to ride it out, even as it gets bigger and bigger.
