You're right. They should've stayed one more year and let Butch develop them into NFL-ready players.

Wow what a hire. Who the hell is this guy? Not being a smartass I really have never heard of him before.

Such an LSU move

Then he should drag Arkie 38-10 and mercy knee them midway through the 4th Qtr in Fayetteville like the D-line coach did?

Damn, I thought Ole Miss had a hard time hiring new coaches with this NCAA mess. Holds your heads up UT fans, our Girls HS basketball coach turned out ok.

Informative article that includes Butch's remarks and coaches' credentials:

Jones Announces Changes To Coaching Staff

I wonder if folks who are meh and/or lol about the hires even know much about them. I didn't know much about Scott and Canales until I read that article. Considering that it's Butch's offense, and their credentials, both seem like pretty solid hires. Scott provides continuity and Canales can add "fresh spin" Butch said he wants. Also, Canales has a lot of recruiting experience in Texas, Florida and the Atlantic states. Butch wasn't going to make a flashy hire for OC that would want to run his own system, and it's not really what he needed to do.

Patterson was one and done, and didnt learn how to run routes under Chaney.

Bray was a first round talent who, under Chaney, never learned to read defenses and went undrafted

Patterson is just a freak talent, and not very smart. Similar to Bama great Forrest Gump. Not like he's been the most fast-learning route guy in the NFL either.

Bray was a 3 star with only a San diego st or San Jose St level offer. He was a stoner, and frankly a brat that took advantage of the situation the coaches were in. Thx to kiffin for pulling Taj Boyds and Bryce Pettys's offers, he was all UT had other than juco transfer Matt simms, so no competition. So many loved his "swag." Bray not learning anything, and going undrafted is on Bray only.

There were plenty of moments where his lack of want to learn, and not just depend on natural talent and swag, hurt the team in a game. Ie...going 3 and out after the D stopped a uf fake punt attempt by Muschamp. Not taking advantage of a pumped up Neyland, and adding to our lead. Instead it sucked out the momentum, and forcing a tired and low depth D back out onto the field. Bray was a cancer, and lost UT more games than he gets credited for.

Bray had a 5* arm, 2* brain and an unranked work ethic imo. Playing under Dooley and Chaney did not help him either

Totally agree with the first part. 2nd part we look at it differently. I think Bray was a cancer that hurt dooley and Chaney as he had them by the balls. The only option they had to play, and bray knew he could get away with anything he wanted. He didn't have to earn it, fans drooled over his swag, and didn't have to be worried about being reprimanded or benched. He took complete advantage of it, and hurt the team. To much blame put on the coaching staff that had a mental asylum, in the locker room and ADs office, they had to figure out how to get under control. Or frankly try to wait it out until it was all purged out. Which is what Jones walked into after, and why I can't stand all the "Jones inherited a dumpster fire" crap. He gets way to much credit, and paid over a million more too.

The fact that not a single vol fan even tried to defend this joke of a hire, every one instead ignored the subject. I actually understand the Scott hire, keep continuity as it's true that you aren't going to hire a big name for a coach on the hot seat unless you overpay. That said, Weinke SAID he wanted the QB job and you gave it to Canales? Wut?

Reason given is Weinke hasn't recruited as a college coach. I'm sure wearing a NC ring and asking the recruit if he wanted to see his Heisman Trophy would have made recruiting hard for him. I guess Butch figured no one in TN would be able to recognize the Heisman since they've never seen one???

Perhaps an even bigger misstep is coming soon. TN is crazy not to hire Blackburn as AD, it appears they will look elsewhere. Rumors galore but biggest one against Blackburn is the Haslems are trying to block it. Thornton is on board. New hire coming in for TN wants the Cincy guy, Haslems want Fulmer.
