And this post only came up from:

LINK

And this line about Winfield:

The consensus All-American helped Ohio State win 43 games in four years and nearly (or should have) played in the first BCS National Championship game in 1998.

The real worry for TN fans down the stretch was that Florida would beat FSU and backdoor their way into a rematch with TN. We had just ended a 5 year losing streak that year to them at home in a crazy OT game and we would have likely lost the rematch IMO.

Rematch was the last thing we wanted. In college football, there should NOT be a rematch in the same season. It's totally homosexual and unfair to the winner. I felt so bad for 2011 LSU.

The real drama that year was on December 5th when there were 3 unbeaten teams, all favored over thier opponent. The naysayers were all saying that it would be a nightmare in its first year with 3 unbeatens -- that had not distanced themselves from the pack. Kansas State, UCLA and Tennessee were all unbeaten and its appeared one would be left out.

UCLA played Miami in a game that had been rescheduled from September after a hurricane. Miami won late as did Texas A&M vs Kansas State in the Big 12 title game. Heck, Miss State scared Tennessee to death until the 4th qtr.

After this, the focus seemed to remain on the 'what if' especially after Kansas State at 11-1 was passed over by the other BCS Bowls and fell to the Blockbuster Bowl. UCLA at least got the Rose and Ohio State got the Sugar. There certainly was 'discussion' about Ohio State or Florida State, but nothing like Florida State getting in over Miami in 2000.

I thought UT snuck in with both K-State and UCLA lost in the final weekend?

"Stumbled" is the better description with the Arkansas game. But, a win is a win regardless of the circumstances

I don't recall any controversy because then if you lost late in the season your hopes of a championship were over. It's just the way it was back then.

To this day I still believe that Ohio State team was a complete team top to bottom and was probably the best team in the country that year.

It took a fluke play for Michigan State to get back in the game. Ohio State was up 24-9 and forced MSU to punt. The punter missed the punt so badly that it hit an Ohio State player squarely in the back as he was running downfield. MSU scored, momentum changed and Plaxico Burress went off. Ohio State had a chance to win at the end of the game but Germaine's 4th down pass was incomplete in the end zone.

So there was really no controversy in FSU getting in? People on talk shows weren't campaigning for OSU over FSU etc? Thanks; it is interesting to me

as I recall, not a huge one. I believe there were a few other one loss teams as well.

I think the only controversy that year was KSU not going to a BCS bowl even though they finished #3.

I can only imagine if this happened in 2014

Undefeated Tenn. and Tulane (we'll call them Boise for this)

1 loss - FSU, OSU, KSU and UCLA

with 2 teams losing the last weekend...have fun selection committee

Ohio state was the best team that year, FSU was the 2nd best when weinke played.

FSU with outzen was not a top 2 team.

The polls and records say differently. The best teams don't lose to 6-6 teams.

Nobody really understood how things worked back then. I recall listening to sports radio and hearing announcers not understanding who would go to what bowl games in the new system. I remember a caller calling a national radio guy and telling him that A&M is guaranteed a BCS berth and the guy completely not understanding what he was saying, and he just kind of responded, uh, yeah I guess 11-2 A&M might be on the bubble to make it in...when in fact A&M as Big 12 champion was guaranteed a spot.

Also, at that time the polls were the football god's will. and Tennessee and FSU were 1 and 2 in both polls and so "the system worked!"

Was Weinke hurt during the UF game, or during practice after the polls came out? I can't remember. But if he got hurt before the final polls came out that last week of the regular season, then the pollsters should've factored that into their decision because Weinki was their offense that year. They really had no business being in the title game without him when their were other equally qualified teams to choose from.

As I said, I didn't follow OSU then like I do now. From what I've heard, MSU punted a ball that ended up going like 30 yards and hitting an OSU gunner who was running to block for the returner. MSU got the ball at the 50, and momentum totally changed.

Not an excuse since I have no vested interest now, but I think this has been an interesting look, at least to me, into what was going on then, and how this could still happen in the future

Weinke got blown out by unranked NC State.

Outzen beat #4 Florida and #12 Virginia.

I know that in 1997, the B10 & Pac 10 were not part of the bowl alliance. That is why Michigan didn't play Nebraska in the 97 title game. Did that change in 1998? I'm thinking it did, but can't 100% remember.
