Here are Auburn’s overall defensive numbers, as per-game averages, through the first three games:

2001: 60 plays, 236 yards, 17.3 ppg
2002: 68 plays, 312 yards, 10.0 ppg
2003: 61 plays, 262 yards, 15.7 ppg
2004: 63 plays, 273 yards, 7.7 ppg
2005: 63 plays, 246 yards, 8.7 ppg
2006: 60 plays, 249 yards, 5.7 ppg
2007: 71 plays, 283 yards, 19.3 ppg
2008: 67 plays, 214 yards, 5.0 ppg
2009: 70 plays, 350 yards, 22.3 ppg
2010: 78 plays, 340 yards, 21.3 ppg
2011: 91 plays, 534 yards, 36.7 ppg

It's all to obvious that a change in method and scheme in '09 with the entrance of Roof is to blame for three years of crap defense.

You just blew my mind. This whole time I thought Malzahn was the problem. Roof is the terrible one, now I see!

2008 defense was kicking arse and taking names during our first few games.

As I have said before, that 08 defense was one of the best at Auburn. It's just got burnt out because we also had one of the worst offenses at Auburn

Roof is just running Chizik's bootleg version of the Tampa 2.

They just need someone who can be the DC on his own, without much input from Chizik...

I remember sitting in the stands for the very first game being excited to see this new "spread offense" that this Tony Franklin guy brought in in-person, and I remember basically facepalming my way through the MSU game, but besides that I have the entire 2008 season erased from memory.

I regret nothing.

I remember the slow sinking feeling in the ULM game of "so... where's the offense?"

Then looking at the scoreboard seeing we got 400 yards and being shocked.

In the second game our offense looked better and our defense played lights out for the first half, I thought the season would be good.

After that it's all just... a blur.

Tray Blackmon and Sen'Derrick Marks said we'd win the SEC that year.

WHAT HAPPENED?!?!

I don't think I've ever been as pumped up for a season as I was for that one

Wouldn't have been that bad of a pick if we had a decent offense

We take such bad angles and tackle so poorly I can't tell if the scheme is bad or not.
