The Sugar Bowl while historically relevant is no longer a desired location.

No fan at the beginning of the year longs to make the Sugar Bowl.

Being in the Sugar Bowl means you were the best team in the SEC that didn't make the championship game (or playoff).

While it's still a great bowl, compared to all the others, it's no longer the ultimate goal.

The bowls are all in decline, due to the "win or bust" mentality. Case in point- look at Florida's indifference to last year's Sugar; even moreso, look at LSU's fans' open hostility to the Peach.

Mindset- if you aren't playing for #1, it isn't worthwhile. Result- there are well over 100 major programs; there is no way to even come close to a truly fair matchup in a playoff.

Clemson currently is in consideration for a shot at the BCS, and would have been in a 4 game playoff had that started this season, and they run the table. Louisville likely is left out in that same scenario; they're behind the SEC (Bama), Pac 12 (Oregon), ACC (Clemson), B1G (Ohio St). Yet, Louisville smoked Florida in the Sugar last year, and Clemson managed a miracle 1 pt win over LSU in the Peach (which is why they started so high in the rankings). And that doesn't even address Baylor and the mega-offense they have, and likely also will be left on the outside looking in. Message- unless you're predetermined, don't bother.

Why pay big money to go to a bowl to see a team that has been told to not bother? Why continue to invest millions to host irrelevant bowls people won't attend?

Depends. If you missed out on the national title game of course the bowl is a let down. Florida last year, I was proud we got back to the Sugar with that schedule and two bad years. If we got back this year I'd be happy too. Now, next year...I want to see a very strong title push darn it.

Here's the deal with the SEC.

- 1st priority is to win SEC Championship.

- Hopefully if you lose the SEC Championship game, you get to go to the Sugar as a consolation prize. Still kind of a letdown.

- If you win and don't make it to the BCS Championship game (hasn't happened in a while), the Sugar Bowl is still just meh because you already did what you came to do.

- If you get to the Sugar Bowl without going to the SEC Championship game (Florida/Arky), then it is still just meh, because the season was pretty much a bust anyway.

Basically, the Sugar Bowl is a letdown for any of the teams with National Championship Hopes (Bama, LSU, GA, FL). For the rest, it is pretty cool because its probably the best they could have expected anyway.
