It has been awarded since 1986. But they did start to retroactively give them to programs that won UPI/Coaches' poll titles prior to that.

Fixed that for you.
But actually I would imagine the winner of the coaches poll will still be awarded the crystal ball trophy so conceivably some team could still catch up with Alabama in the future, although it's not likely.
