Leaving today benefits the program. Recruiting has started earlier and earlie every yearr, and right now is a key time. By hanging around and being a lame duck, he's hurting the program. Anyone he does recruit might flip when he leaves at the end of the year too. This lets USCe start the coaching search early before there's a ton of competition at the end of the year and to start moving on.
This was done out of respect and the right thing to do. This is far different from a coach jumping ship and leaving his team for a better job, getting fired, etc.

Remember his pissed off press conference? He was mad that folks asserted that he might quit after the season, so what does he do? He quits during the season.
