Not sure why at this point. We've played ECU in Greenville before, back when UNC and NC State wouldn't.

No idea. It was out of left field for everybody.

Something to do with schedule. As it stood we had six home games, 5 away and a neutral. Now we're trading one of those away games for a home I believe.
Edit: Basically what it comes down to is where do we play clemson. If it's away all our other ooc are going to be at home. If not, then one of our ooc games will be typically neutral site in charlotte.

We were supposed to play ECU at their place in 2019, but we removed the game from our schedule and owe ECU about $1 million.

I like ECU. I think of them like an estranged niece.
Yall need to do her right.

I do as well. The area of SC I live in borders rural eastern NC where most folks are either ECU or NC State fans. I've always liked the Pirates and their fans.

We used to have a thing with NC State (my impression, more so than UNC).
We absolutely need to play a NC school every year. Personally I'd rather play East Carolina every year in a home and home.
Or maybe something in Charlotte. Think both schools might like that for recruiting purposes.
Charlotte is actually closer to USC than to East Carolina (too tired to pull up a map).
My two cents anyway. Would like to have NC State or ECU on the schedule permanently though.

Yeah, we wanted another home game. This isn't really a shocker.

It's kind of a shame though. We've played them like 4-5 times since 2010. A couple of times in Columbi and a couple in Charlotte.
I think ECU would've been a cool little trip.

I agree. Kind of like that trip to UCF a few years ago.
One-off unique road trips are a good thing.

I would take ECU over Missouri

Makes sense - South Carolina already has a pretty booked up OOC game template.
- Very good OOC rival
- 1AA game
So that leaves 2 spots, 1 of which USCe has done a nice job scheduling a 2nd P5 game with. For a program fighting to be on the rise, a road game at a real stadium with a packed house against a perennially solid upper-non P5 team is a no win situation (not to mention losing another home game).

ECU is a great college, but the infrastructure in Greenville sucks. The town just can't handle being inundated with an extra 10k people. Parking is a joke, traffic is a nightmare and the services just aren't there. I would like for ECU to join a P5 conference someday, but I think the city of Greenville more than the Athletic Associate of the University will be ECU's downfall.

The NCAA must have stepped in to avoid a repeat of one of the worst CFB games ever played. If you saw that turd of a game last year you now what I'm talking about.

This sucks for ECU. They have a decent-sized stadium (seats 50k) & a loyal fan base (often leads the non-P5 in attendance), but they've long struggled to get "name" teams to come play them in Greenville. The other N.C. schools have always looked at them not so much as a little brother but more like a bastard step-child who has no right to even sit at the dinner table.
That said, it isn't hard to understand why USC would've wanted out of this game. The $1m hit is a small price to pay when compared to the take from a home game even against a lower-division program. They would've been playing on the road, against a "smaller" school eager to be competitive with the big boys - no doubt ECU players, coaches & fans would've had this game circled before the season started. Beating them would mean nothing, but losing to them would be costly - truly a no-win situation. And then, playing Clemson isn't going to get any easier in the foreseeable future, so like any program trying to rebuild, USC would be wise to schedule cupcakes for the rest of its OOC games.
