Sounds like Pruitt screwed up the Cole communication

Shocking, right? I can't believe some thought the guy could be a Division 1 head coach this past year. He is a great football mind, but he is still pretty raw.

From another board a general overview of Cole's dad on radio in Birmingham this morning.

quote:

This may have been mentioned but Riley Cole's father was on a Birmingham radio show this morning and in no uncertain terms he said that this was not about Nick Saban. He said Coach Saban was a class act. In fact I think he may have even said one of the classiest, best guys he's ever met and he was very appreciative for what he did for Riley. He went on to say that it made him angry to hear people on the radio, or social media trash Saban for what happened with Riley. When he finally got into how everything went down he said it boiled down to communication and he "implied" that it had more to do with Pruitt than anyone else. He said after the coaching change that the communication dropped off, Riley couldn't get a call back from Pruitt, and when Pruitt brought up the greyshirt deal to Riley a few days ago, he could not get a straight answer. He said that he was pretty certain that CNS was not happy with the way everything was handled. Just another in a line of many examples of how people react to what they "think" happened. 9 times out of 10 things are much more complex than what we know and things are not what they seem. Very unfortunate situation for all involved. The father said that he wished Riley would've handled things a little differently in regards to Twitter but he said "this is an 18 yo kid and they react due to emotions."

Riley Cole can kick rocks.

Dude got a scholarship offer from the most elite recruiting program in the history of college football - as a player whose only other offers were from South Alabama and Wake Forest, and wants to bitch about not being appreciated because we asked him to wait 4 months to enroll on a full ride.

Kid can shut the frick up and sit the frick down.

Pruitt works for Saban. He wasn't making those decisions himself.

This whole deal is just an unfortunate part of big-time football, but acting like Saban was totally unaware of this whole deal is absurd.

I don't think he was implying Pruitt made the decision (or even arguing with the decision), I think his point was Pruitt didn't communicate the decision very well, which as the contact was his job. But, Pruitt had just jumped on board, was probably heavily involved with other, higher priority kids and this just slipped the cracks.

That's how most schools cut the cord. Just cut off communication and hope the prospect gets the message and leaves on his own. That way you avoid the bad press of actually pulling an offer.

At least he kept his offer instead of pulling it. Hasn't Harbaugh already completely abandoned a kid that was committed for like 2 years?

We weren't pulling his offer, though. We were offering him a greyshirt. We generally do that 1-2 times a year. Bradley Bozeman did it 2-3 years ago, played a lot the last few years. Christian Bell is doing it. All the kids who have greyshirted are in the program, they are just deferred a semester. John Parker Wilson was a greyshirt was back when.

Timing sucks, but it is a bit different than telling him he needs to move on.

What makes riley Cole so special for this to be posted constantly? This happens all the time. They offered a greyshirt and didn't completely pull his offer. Nick saban knows what he's doing when it comes to recruiting.

I know it works sometimes, but usually the greyshirt offer is a way to get rid of a kid by his own accord. You don't offer a greyshirt to a kid you actually want. Some kids stick around anyway.

At the very least, you're making it clear to the kid that he's pretty low on the totem pole coming into school.

The timing is shitty. Not even giving the kid a chance to make an OV elsewhere to weigh his options.

Because Saban is a lightning rod and therefore any kid that has something like this or transfers out happens it automatically becomes a bigger deal than if it happens basically anywhere else.

Kind of comes with the territory I guess.

i feel nothing. if he cant wait a semester to play for the best team in the country, good luck elsewhere. we have about 3 5 star lbs likely in this class alone. Grey shirt has worked out great for lots of players, cant think of a greyshirt in sabans tenure that didnt get a scholarship the next semester (usually its for grades or physical reasons)

Yea, agree. I mean, you have to look around at some point and read the tea leaves. If he thinks he can compete and play ahead of Davis, Wilson, etc, then that is awesome, but a greyshirt doesn't really change his opportunity to do that.

Well, who really is going to be happy about being offered a "grey shirt" when you think you are going on a regular scholly? If you truly want to play at Alabama and think it is worth it to wait it out, it still could be a good deal--probably better than playing all 4 years at a South Alabama or Wake Forest.

Is he going to Wake Forest? That's a free $200k undergrad degree there.

But this doesn't fit the narrative that Nick Saban is a tpos.
