A reader crunched the numbers, hope you enjoyed last night’s event that included 131 ads and also some pretty great football in between.

This was likely close to the reality before the rule change as well though.

Really solid intel. Is there any data out yet about the length of games in 2023 vs. 2022? Herbstreit was talking big shite in the Utah/Florida game about how games would be shorter this season, but I don't know if that's true or not. The Georgia game was still long as frick with only 1 booth review and maybe 3 or 4 injury timeouts.

No one has ever had a problem with the length of the actual football games, but rather the unnecessary and artificial lengthening of the game for commercials. Now the big push from ESPN is to have less game action so that they don’t have to sacrifice commercial time, like Lay’s replacing chips in the bag with air.
No one should be surprised by any of this by the way. College football fans by and large cheer when ESPN pays hundreds of millions to their conference for broadcast rights. University presidents and conference commissioners sold the sport to ESPN, so of course they’ll use the influence they bought to shape the game to their liking.

The networks have to pay those contracts somehow.
Personally, I would rather have live ad reads and graphics during the game than constant stoppages.

I disagree with you there buddy. The length of the NFL games were always the one thing that I liked more about pro football. Much more consumable. After a while watching a 4 hour football game can begin to feel like a chore or feel like work.

This. They could work on some subliminal messaging and not piss people off. I’m an a-hole anyway but I tend to boycott brands that annoy the shite out of me with ads

Buy sensory deprivation chamber. Record game. Get in chamber. Emerge and watch recorded game, skipping commercials.
Option 2. Bitch about commercials on the internet.
That’s it folks. Those are our choices.

It significantly drops their income from ads, or you can just watch it online for free with a VPN. I agree bitching about the game online is going to do nothing, you gotta act and do something about it.

I really don't see this issue getting fixed. The networks are desperate for ad revenue cash right now and the NCAA listens to the Networks (although i would think the NCAA has some leverage here that they are not using).
There is a reason that the past few years have seen this bullshite power play to remove ESPN related channels right as season starts. Disney/ESPN needs a crapload of cash (they are on the hook to pay Comcast at least 10 billion for HULU next year) so they are going to squeeze every potential opportunity to get more revenue they can and use every dirty trick in the book.
If anything, this gets worse.

I’m afraid you are right, it only gets worse. But its not just destroying TV watching - its destroying the in game experience as well. The extra ads mean no action on field and more dead time to fill in between plays.
Schools are gonna need to hire clowns to do skits during the extra longer breaks.

I'm just glad the classy uniforms don't have disgusting uniform ads like other leagues have whored themselves out to.

Maybe you should watch another episode of My Little Pony, Nancy. Leave the "chore" of college football to fans.

Then they can charge advertisers more for less commercial breaks. Not that difficult.

They can if the advertisers are willing to pay the higher rates.
