So that the media would have given him Kenny Football? Hell, Manziel himself was calling him that at the beginning, and Hill didn't want to be attached to JFF's legacy, for better or worse.

Eh, it was a business decision. If his career had taken off a la Manziel's it would have proven to be a prudent move. Not like the existence of a trademarked moniker made him suck

I personally hated the nickname from Day One, long before the trademark. Spur can confirm or you can check old posts.

With that being said, there are at least two reasons to trademark something. One is to use it yourself. Another is to protect yourself by preventing others from using it. (Eligibility issues, etcetera). ("Not only did I not authorize or profit from that t-shirt, I tried to stop them. Here is my trademark and here is my cease-and-desist letter.").

Kenny's dad is pretty savvy and seems to have acted with the second motive.

It does seem tonedeaf in retrospect, but hindsight is 20:20.
