My point was more that Foley had a formula that worked and it carried him a long way, but that day is done. The college sports world isn't going to allow for frugality in pay or facilities going forward, and soon ADs that can leverage branding and fundraising will be more valuable than the ones who can pick out which assistent coach will be the next great head coach. He was a GOAT in his era, which is all anyone can be.

I've been very vocal in criticizing Foley for not leveraging UF's football and Basketball success back in the mid 2000's. We should have been the Oregon by partnering up with companies and increasing our brand. It was very evident the last few years that he lost the arms race by not spending money when you basically had to.

Despite those concerns, Foley is one of the most committed Gators in the history of the University. He gave his heart and soul to the school and wanted nothing more than to make it great. I applaud his accomplishments and appreciate his tireless work to bring in the best coaches he could find.

I knew him before he was AD and I can't believe 25 years have past us by. I wish him nothing but success as he transitions into the next phase of his life. Whatever it is I know he'll be rocking the Orange n Blue.

Has Foley cited a reason for retiring? He's a little young to retire and a little old to start anew somewhere else. It's a tough dirty business to be sure but his retirement is still surprising.

Oh and Gators, I hear Mike Hamilton is available.

The SEC overall All-Sports Trophy has gone to the Gators in 24 of Foley's 25 years as the AD.
