It's truly sad how many of their fans become UNC or Duke fans during basketball season.

I disagree. They're uppity but it's not the same level of arrogance displayed by the Big X. There are indications the Big X approached UNC and UVA before settling on Maryland.
Neither school was interested in becoming smaller fish in a bigger academic pond. They led the shoring up of the ACC against further raids from the Big X by establishing the very strong GOR.
If that effort had been unsuccessful, I think both schools would have come to the SEC. They just don't mesh culturally with the northern schools.

UVA is an elite academic university, has a very powerful alumni base, a great overall athletic department, great TV markets, is a founding member, and has money spilling out of their pockets.
