I bet we hang an "NIT 2014" banner

I bet our fans weren't going to support the team if it made the Dance anyway just like they didn't support the team all year even before conference play started.

Depends on the success of the program. I don't see Kentucky hanging one in Rupp. They do have their '76 NIT listed in Memorial Coliseum but it's a little different now.

I wouldn't fault someone like, just as an example, South Carolina hanging one. Just because they haven't had much success in basketball.

The NIT used to be a really big deal, not so much anymore.

That's what I was thinking, probably from back when the NCAA Tournament was much smaller. You'd have some really incredible teams in the NIT.

In 1973 (in regards to the banner pic up above), the NCAA tournament only allowed 22-25 teams. That particular team went 25-8, 3 of which were to 27-0 NC State. Two of those losses to NC State were by 4 or less. Another was in the actual NIT (they played a loser's bracket game back then). One was in the ACC Tournament (in OT), meaning that they were 22-2 outside of post season and NC State games.

The amount of teams eligible and the amount of teams that make either the NCAA or NIT is less than half of the amount of FBS teams who make a bowl game.

Football programs will put a Liberty Bowl trophy in the case, the NIT isn't any different than a low level bowl.

Now a NIT Championship is worthy of a banner, very few teams have won either the NCAAs or NIT, even fewer have won both.

NIT appearances, elite 8, final 4 banners are completely different to a championship banner.

I honestly don't know if we hung our two, or not.

There is literally a blank banner hanging in that pic.

Of course they should. All of you High School Charlies acting like your school is too good for the NIT certainly should protest anytime your football team goes to the Music City,Liberty, Gator or Compass Bowl. Absolutely zero difference.

The difference is it is easier to get to those type of bowls than it is to "only the NIT" for teams who do not make it to the NCAAs now that the NCAA runs the NIT.

It isn't as prestigious as playing in the NCAAs, but it isn't anything to sneeze at either.

When did they take those down from Rupp? That used to be there as well as all NCAA appearances as well as a banner commemorating being the AP #1 following the 1969-1970 season.

If we want to see that kind of bball we don't have to pay for a ticket and parking we can just go down to the gym or playground

ETA
And those Mizzou NIT appearance banners are just embarrassing.
Look we sucked this year - And We Made A Banner!

Like Cheshire said, I'd be fine with it but it would be controversial.

Yes. In the exact same way the B1G is a prestigious football conference

You may be talking about Memorial. The wall there on the far end has any championships up to the 70s (conference included) and all of that. The '76 NIT is in there too. I'm pretty sure in Rupp it's all Final Four, Runner-Up, and NCs on one end then retired jerseys on the other.

I could be wrong though, it's been awhile since I've been in Rupp but I don't remember the ones you're talking about.

ETA: it may be on a small banner at the end of the jerseys on the side.
