Two Gainesville residents are in police custody following an argument that escalated to shots fired outside of an occupied University of Florida dormitory early this morning.
A group of people in the Midtown bar area got into an argument around 3 a.m. after the bars had closed, said Maj. Brad Barber of the University Police Department. They walked back to their cars, which were in the Murphree Hall parking lot, where the argument turned into a fight.
Clay Allen Shanks, 25, is accused of punching the victim in the jaw before the groups separated, Barber said. As the crowd separated, Barber said, Shanks pulled a .380 Ruger out of his girlfriend’s purse, fired the handgun once into the ground, dropped the weapon and ran off.
The girlfriend, Sarah Elizabeth Gooden, 21, then picked up the gun and got into her car — a Toyota sedan — with a friend and drove onto campus, where they were stopped by UPD, Barber said.
About 10-15 minutes later, Shanks was stopped by Gainesville police in the 2600 block of West University Avenue, Barber said.
Witnesses driving a blue Mazda pickup were coming to assist their friends during the fight, but turned around and left when they heard the shot ring out, Barber said.
Shanks was arrested on battery, discharging a firearm on school property, use of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, and resisting arrest without violence.
Gooden was arrested on carrying concealed firearm and tampering with evidence.
Both were being held at the Alachua County Jail.
